Logan County Schools In 1927

Contributed by Dodie (Smith) Browning

Recently I was perusing the website of the West Virginia State Archives & History and ran across a list of schools that were active in Logan County in 1927. It was really a surprise because I had no idea there were that many schools, especially African American schools in Logan County.  In 1927 Logan County was no different than any other county in the United States; the schools were segregated.   I found three of the schools on this list that I attended in the 1940s and 1950s: Coal Branch, Logan Central Grade School and Logan Senior High. Wonder where students from Logan went to Junior High School in 1927?  In fact, I don’t see any Junior high schools (nor what is today called middle schools) on the list. I see at least  eleven (11) schools on Harts Creek in 1927!
