Hello I’m Kristin Caudill. I live in Logan as of right now. I have wanted to see the history and how much Logan County has changed. I was born and raised here in Logan. I’m only 23 years old but from what I see Logan has changed in several places. I have never heard of Frankiln’s or anything like that but I will take everyones word for it. These pictures have learned me about my hometowns history and I’m thankful you posted them.

Franklins was a Restaurant on Stratton Street. They had great food at a good price. I remember it from the mid fifties. My friend Jerry Walsh worked there as a teenager as his first job.

      1. Charlene Campbell

Loren, I can’t believe you don’t remember Franklins Daily on Stratton Street. It was in our time of growing up.

Sally served me when I was a teenager back in the Fifties. She always remembered me when I came back over the years until she retired. Everybody loved her. They should post a placard on that Highway with her remembrance on it.

  5. I am trying to find info on the still standing Holland apartments on deadmans curve curious as to whom used to live in them and what they originally looked like please email me

    1. hi.. add. for it is 589 stratton st.. i looked in the 47 phone book.. there is none there.. if you can find an old phone book you can look them up in there..

    2. I knew members of the Haislip family — Mr. Haislip owned a bakery in town — and I think they lived in the apartment or near it. The Haislips later moved to Norton, Va. One of my co-workers at Island Creek no. 23, Harry Agee, lived close by, too.

      1. Douglas Dempsey

        Robert,
Good to hear from you! I see that you worked at Mine #23 which lies between Mine # 22 and Mine #27. Where did you portal into Mine #23? Was that a slope or shaft portal? Did it use some of the #27 facilities?

Do you know what seam the mine was in? The original big mines at Holden (and Omar) were in the “Cedar Grove” seam which came to be known as the Island Creek seam. As Island Creek’s mining progressed away from Holden into Mingo County it appears that the seam “split” into two separate seams (Upper Cedar Grove and Lower Cedar Grove) and mining was done in each split to some degree.

In 1927 when Island Creek was putting its shafts on Pine Creek down for the #22 Mine, they “announced” the seam was 15 foot thick which, I speculate, was a point where the Upper and Lower Cedar Grove came together. However, My impression is that workings in Mine #22 was much more like 6 or 7 feet heights.

        Thanks for your info!

I lived in the Holland Apts prior to Dr. Sells taking them over. I remember 3 old women that lived there and they had lived there for quite some time. They are gone now and I can’t remember all their names but I do remember Ms. Dress. Her son was Joe Dress that ran Aracoma Beverage Co. in Cora when it was there. The other two women’s names fail me but I do remember that one of the women that lived there had a Italian last name and her brother lived next door in the big house next to Holland Apts on the east end side. His last name was something like Yakamino. Him and his wife owned some of the apts. including the one his sister lived in. I remember the other elderly woman had a gas leak one night and the city fire dept. wouldn’t let her stay in her apartment for obvious reasons so we fixed her a place on the couch and she stayed with us till she got it fixed. Those women were sweet and I feel blessed to have neighbors like those we had. We would even exchange gifts at Christmas time. We watched out for each other. I wouldn’t worry none when we had to leave for a couple of days because I knew they would keep an eye on everything. Holland apts was nice and quite then. It’s far from that now which I noticed that happens everywhere when the older people die off. We lived in two different apartments there for a total of 15 years. I’m glad that we’re I do remember the woman that lived in the apartment before me was an Allie. I think she was kin to Mike Allie.

      1. Hi Reinhardt… Thanks for your recollections of living in the Holland Apts. Joe Dress’s father, Toney, was married to my Aunt Thelma (known as Tootsie). Joe was a step-cousin to my grandmother. Toney was a lovely Italian man who ran a beer company, and I believe that Joe took it over, however it may have been a different company Joe ran. Joe’s mother was Maria Magdaline Petrovich (known as Mary &/or Magdaline), who died in 1946, aged 47. Is this the “Ms. Dress” you are talking about? I don’t know much about her, except that she was an exceptionally tall woman – standing at almost 6 foot 8! If you are talking about my Aunt Tootsie – maybe take a look at my “Barath Family History” on this website. That provides a bit of insight into her life. I am hoping to get a Dress Family History done soon. Carlo C.

        1. Reinhardt Evans

I’m sorry Carlo, but the Ms Dress I’m talking about was a short woman and I believe she passed away after 2000. I remember when I met her she introduced herself as Ms. Dress. I remember Joe Dress from Aracoma Beverage cause he would get gas at Napier’s Exxon when I worked there. Joe drove a blue Ford F-150. I asked her if she was kin to Joe and she said Yes Joe is my son. But this Ms. Dress was short and wore glasses. She lived on the 2nd floor. We must be talking about a different generation of Dresses. But they are definitely in the same family. This Joe Dress came in the station in the 80’s and 90’s. I haven’t seen him in a long time, well since they shut Aracoma Beverage down.

    1. Beautiful pictures, i have been there on a few occasions to visit family, but now that my uncle past in August i don’t know if i will be there again.

  6. Love seeing these pictures but it would be better if we could copy and share them. Any way to do that?

    1. All of our pictures have share buttons. My collection of vintage Logan County pictures has cost me thousands of dollars. One of the reasons I created this site was to share my collection and to provide a place for others to share theirs also. I had to block copying because so many people were taking our pictures and putting them on other sites such as Facebook and Pinterest, etc. It got to be so much of a problem that one person asked me to remove her pictures from our site. I hope you understand our position about copying. You are more than welcome to share them but please do not make copies for other web sites. Thank you.

Does anyone have pictures of the Gold and Blue above Logan East Junior High or Franklin’s in Logan. My uncle Charles Oney worked at Lewis Furniture Co. in Logan and on his lunch on Friday evening would come and take me and my aunt to Logan. 1. There is a picture of the parking structure above. I operated that thing as a senior in high school. My mom worked for Dr. Chillag and he hired Randy Belcher ( from Whitman ) and I to run it after school.
Boley Hite was the hospital handyman who had to try to keep the thing running.

  16. This reminds me of the 35mm movies we had of the family and what my Great Aunt Mary had to say about them many years ago…”I can’t watch them, I just want to reach out and give everybody a hug!”

  17. This is such a trip down memory Lane. I actually remember playing on the red merry-go-round at Justice Grade school in 1959-60! And we still have a piece of the marble taken from the walls of the old Logan County Courthouse when they were razing it! It is now a marble top on a 150 year old antique cherry hand carved dresser! Thanks to all for sharing your photos!!!

  19. Linda (Maynard) Sturgill

I am guessing somewhere along our genealogy we are cousins. My mother is Lillian Belcher Maynard. Her mother was Christine Mullins daughter of Joe Mullins and Belle Smith Mullins. Her sisters are Violet Butcher and Freda Vance. Love the pics and will share you on my FB page.

    1. Brenda White Beechner

Love the pictures and have a question about one of them. There is one from B. Kirk..”Blood in WV: A caption on it says, “Hick White” Watermill or the Old McDonald Mill”. Was wondering if you might have more information about the Old McDonald Mill, like the name of the McDonald family that would have had it. I am a descendent from the McDonalds. My G Grandfather was Boliver McDonald from Crooked Creek (Logan Co) WV. I grew up there and go HOME often. Brenda White Beechner
