Rum Creek homeplace, Logan County, WV
Rum Creek Homeplace courtesy of Wanda Bryant Shell.

By Wanda Bryant Shell.  This is the old home place where I was raised. This home is set behind the train tracks. And I had to make sure I get at the bus stop so I wouldn’t get blocked. There were times I went under then It was so scary. but I didn’t want to miss the School bus. There was so much love here in this home in a hollow in the Appalachia’s Mountains. In Logan West Virginia. This little place Is on Rum Creek. Dad worked hard just up the road at the coal mines .all the men that live in this hollow work so hard to keep the family warm and fed. This little place everybody had a lot of love for each other. And still today they show that love. Mom was always home taking care of things and us kids. There is a lot of memories here. I live here with my family until I got married to Bob. I will never forget where I came from. And proudly to be a coal miners daughter. I have this picture today here in my home I took it when I was a little girl. That home isn’t there anymore. Thank you Dad for everything you done for us kids you work so hard. And Mom I thank you for raising us up right and telling us about the love of Jesus and that we needed him in our life. Mom always talked about the Lord until the day she died. I really miss that. I love my Mom and Dad. They are gone but never forgotten these memories will always be there and in my heart. I always go back once a year to see some of my family and friends. The good part I will see them again when Jesus comes and take us home. To be in that beautiful place called Heaven. And this is my true story.. ……and forgot to say my brother Mike made a special trip up Rum Creek and got me a med size tree stump and I have it here in my home setting around my fireplace. So see I got part of Rum Creek in my home. Thanks, Mike For getting this for me.

  1. Hi folks, here is a link to a web project that a few of us have been working on for several years, now. This link is about Yolyn resident, Dick Justice. If you want to read about more Logan-area musicians, including Russell Brown of Yolyn, see the names on the right hand side of the page and click on them! If you or anyone you know might have more information about any of the folks included, please let me know so we can highlight our musical heritage as best as possible! Thanks! https://johnhaddox.faculty.wvu.edu/folk-music-of-the-southern-west-virginia-coalfields/dick-justice

Was there a theater in Argyle. If so, can someone provide a picture and the exact location? Thanks!

      1. Tom A. Jones Jr.

Think the owners name was Mr Chambers and it was 25 cents to see a
movie. I saw Lash LaRue there in person. He used to give away items
in a drawing at intermission. Rumor was Mr. Chambers checked all the
quarters he got and found one worth $1,200 in the 50s.

Would anyone have any information on a boarding house on Rum Creek….may have been called/known as Brinkley’s Boarding House?

    1. mary Cole Henderson

      1. John Christopher Haddox

Thanks for getting back to me. I’m looking, too, for anyone who may have known Dick Justice (a great singing/guitar playing coal miner who is buried at Yolyn…found his grave a few years ago), and Russell Brown….a singing coal miner (tracked down his family just a few weeks ago). I know lots about Dick, but would love to speak with anyone else who remembers him. Thanks!

        1. John, just wondering if you would consider
doing a Post on this website about all of your
          research work about Dick Justice?

There is a Memorial page with the grave
on the findagrave site. Located in Yolyn Cemetery.

Rum Creek got its name due to a barrel of
rum falling off of a truck and going into
the creek according to online research.

You can search for the Brinkley’s Boarding House
on this website by going to Site Index and
looking at the 1947 and 1969 phonebooks.
Also do a online search for it.

Also a local realtor might be able to help you.

          1. Bob. Thanks for asking. I am working on a project that features numerous musicians from southern WV, including Logan County. Once that is up and running, I’ll most certainly share the links with this group, and many others. So, give me some time and I’ll do it! In the meantime, you can see a video of me singing at Dick’s grave a few years ago….I think I was the first one up to that grave site in a very long time….it was completely grown over–could hardly see it until I was right up on it. It is on Youtube…search Dick Justice Grave Visit.

          2. John, thanks for the info.
            Looking foward in the future
            reading about your project.

You might try to make contact
with Brandon Kirk’s Blog as he
might be able to help you.
On the right hand side of this page.

          1. John Christopher Haddox

Thanks, Cora! I did exchange messages with Teedy a few years ago…she was very young with Dick died and didn’t really know much about him, or have any interest in talking about him. Appreciate your letting me know that, however! Thanks!

    2. Chris, it would be nice to know who donated the photo?
The year might be in the 1940s.

Might have been singers at the Slagle Baptist Church.
Maybe do an online search for the church singers.

If you go up 5 rows there is a photo of the
Slagle Grade School teachers, kinda looks like the singers.

        1. Rick, thanks for your comment.
From L-R can you please ID your
          Grade School teachers.

          What classes did they teach?

What year was the photo taken?

      1. Thanks, Greg. Do you have any more information about them? Other pics? Anything about their music…when/where/what type of music they played? Thanks a bunch!

A moving trip down memory lane this morning. Having been born at Slagle, I especially appreciated the pictures of Slagle grade school, Slagle Baptist Church, and the old tipple we walked or drove under twice every day on our way to and from school. My parents were Ira and Aracoma “boots” Campbell. Siblings are, Garreth, Lynn, Lana, Monty, Allie (Sue), and Joey. We moved to Stollings near the end of my 6th grade year but it was those years at Rum Creek that made me who I am today. Thanks for the memories . . .

  10. My parents were Bill and Margie (Moore) Vankovich. Daddy was the son of Gazel and Anna Torok Vankovich. His father was killed in the MacBeth explosion in 1937 when daddy was only 11 years old. His brothers and sisters were: Steve, Eugene and Edgar and his sisters were Mary Ann (Jones) and Irene (Simko). Daddy worked in the MacBeth tipple in the fifties and then went to Westmoreland over in Boone county. He also worked for Elkay. My mother’s parents were Laurence and Cora (Saunders) Moore. Pappaw was also a coal miner he died from black lung and complications from the flu. Mommy raised us and then went to work as a CNA for Guyan Valley and then Holden Hospital until she retired. My brother, Larry Vankovich was killed/murdered by a drunk driver in 1975. I went to Dehue Grade School until we moved to McConnell. Loved living on Rum Creek, playing in the hills and creek behind our house. Wonderful memories of all the communities and people.

Such a shame nothing much is left of our history. It’s like our very culture has been erased….Sadly, not even the historical markers remain.

  25. Thanks for the wonderful and precious memories.

Kids on Rum Creek had a childhood other kids could only dream of, at least that is the way I feel. Sure we had it hard at times, but thats what made us who we are today. Rum Creek Kids, were raised like weeds, during tough times we would bounce back if stepped on or insulted, unlike kids today.

    PHOTO…….
The guy in the middle in the photo with me and Gary Dennison is Bobby Blankenship, he was the son of Leanord and Silvia Blankenship. They lived at Hutchinson from around 1959 to 1962. We all three served in Viet Nam at the same time, that is where the picture was taken in Da Nang Viet Nam, 1967. Heard both Bobby and Gary passed away from heart attacks a few years back, guess who is now on a low fat diet!

    BORTH FAMILY………
As for the Borth family I will always be thankful for Susan Borth’s Dad, think his name was Pete. Our family was going through some rough times, Dad had been out of work for over a year because the coal mining was slow. Remember Pete Borth stepping up on the porch when we lived at Yolyn and offering Dad a job, it was like Christmas morning. The entire family was thankful for that moment in time, we were living on government issued food and Dad was hauling groceries for Lonnie Ward to help pay bills. Remember Pete saying, when the job came open Buck, I had you in mind.

During my high school years I always had a secret crush on Susan Borth, but was to shy to let her know it. When she would get on the bus at Logan High School I would just stare and lose my nerve to talk to her.

    1. Tom Jones is my cousin as well markie and Sharon grandparents were Lillian and willard McNeely I remember going to rum creek when I was little so much fun at grandma house . My mother’s name was Janice McNeely and my dad was Ronald Tolley would love to go back and visit grandpa is buried there.

  26. Wilma Jean Workman Zigmond

I was born at Slagle in 1946 to Dova Lee Manns Workman and Challis Workman. I had one sister, Carol Joyce. We lived across the tracks from the company store and I have heard Phyllis Dillon Adkins talk about working in the company store and coming with my aunt, Eliza Manns Price, to my house and my Mom would fix them lunch. When I was in junior high we moved to Yolyn below the store. I lived on Rum Creek until I was 17 and then Mom and Dad moved to Chapmanville my senior year in high school. I loved growing up in the coal camp where families loved and cared for one another. I remember Ida Pearl and James Matthews, Ruth Price, Jerry Price, Don Price , who married my Aunt Eliza, Sharon and Nancy Roberts, Susan Bevino, Sandy and Danny White, Richard White and when we moved to Yolyn the Bevinos, Keatons, Smiths, Borths, Sluss and Vaughn to name a few. 1. My mom was born in Slagle in March 1936 during a snow storm. Her name was Laura Scalf. She married Ted Morzark 16 years later. My grandfather was Bud (David) Scalf and my granny was Mandy Scalf. They had 10 kids, 2 died as infants. The oldest to the youngest: Eliene, Emily, Laura Mae, Carol Sue, Larry, Alice and Doug. When my grandparents died. They were living in Madison Hires in Logan. My Aunt Eliene Hanks and Aunt Alice Beckett are the only ones and their families that live in WV now. I have very fond memories of visiting my granny, aunts, uncles and cousins. We loved stopping at Hawkins Nest on our way to Logan. My granny was an awesome cook. No matter what time we arrived at her house, she had hot food waiting for us and the table was set. Boy, I miss her and all those times !! By the way, I am Lisa.

I was born at Slagle and lived there for about 2-3 yrs. Dad worked in the coal mines. An aunt and uncle lived at Argyle with 10 kids. Some of the kids worked at the old Hager Theater and Ben Lowe’s store before they moved to Michigan. Brought back some good memories.

    1. Hello Cora;
A bit of history about Rum Creek,Logan Co. WV. I see your name was probably chosen from one of your Chambers ancestory relatives.
The first settlers on Rum Creek were : Robert Lowe,Wm. Burgess(1814), and Harrison Chambers. Arminta (Burgess) and Husband Harrison Chambers had 11 children. I have been told that Harrison and Arminta are buried at Logan City Cemetery.
