  1. I’m trying to solve a family mystery (one of many, I’m finding out). I am looking for info on Dr. Hiram Commodore Jones, who was a Dr in Logan in the 1910s and 20s, and who also owned Davis Creek Coal Co.
I am also looking for info on Mary Pulley McCoy. A body was found floating in the Ohio River at Hanging Rock in 1917 with a steel rail tied to her. At the time, there was some confusion about the identity of the body. It was first identified as Mary, but was later determined to be Lula Viers, murdered by the father of her 2 year old son. I have various news clippings about this story, but no info as to the true fate of Mary.
Both Dr. Jones and Mary are connected to my family by circumstance, but only one is connected by blood. My grandmother, Ada Lorena Ball, was using Dr Jones for the paternity of her son, my uncle Albert Ball, in 1916. According to family history, my grandmother was raped by a Dr in Logan. She was 13 years old. Mary Pulley was her friend, and meant to be a witness in the proceedings. I have found no information as of yet about the outcome of this trial. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  3. I am searching for family of Edna Elsie Walker that gave birth to my uncle February of 1924. At the time of the birth she was 19. My grandfather was the father and the birth certificate says they were married but I can’t find ANYTHING else about her. My uncle, her son, is being returned to us after being killed in WWII and I would love to be able to bury his remains with his mother.

      1. Hello Bob! My uncles name was Mayburn Leslie Hudson. His mothers maiden name was Edna Elsie Walker. I have hit a dead end with her. She was born in Boone County WV and in February of 1924 she was 19 years old.

  4. Looking for information on Frank “French” McCoy. Born on Feb 24, 1928 in Logan County, WV (according to Family Bible), he was the son of Mathew (Mathew, Mat) McCoy and Tressie Tiller McCoy. Tressie and Matt (Mat) married in Logan County, WV in 1927. Matt (Mat) McCoy died on June 23, 1929 when he was hit by a train in Boyd County, Kentucky. Tressie lived in Logan for a few months after Matt’s death, then moved to Mingo County with French, where she was found on the 1930 US Census living in Gilbert with her parents, Green (G.W.) Tiller and Bertha M. (Bertha Mae Justice) Tiller.

Family stories state that French burned to death in a fire on March 4, 1933 (source: Family Bible). Some cousins remember being told French was playing with matches, but my mom told me that his grandpa, Green Tiller, was burning brush in a field and French fell into the fire after falling and rolling down a hill.

It seems odd to me that there is no newspaper article discussing such a tragic death of a 5 year old child, nor can I find any type of death certificate for the child.

My grandmother (Tressie) married Joseph Waytovich (noted a Joe Waich in multiple sources), sometime prior to 1931, and was back in Logan County by then. Joseph was crushed to death by a coal car while working for the Mallory Mine number 5 on 17 Sep 1932.

I realize that some of this happened in a different county than Logan, but since my grandmother, Matt and French lived in Logan for a time, I was hoping perhaps one of you had information in your research about the family.

Thanks for any help, or any suggestions on further areas to research.

    Mariah Felty Brazil

    1. Mariah, you should research the Tiller family tree for your family records as
you might be looking in the wrong state.

  21. Was wondering how to find out what mine my great grandfather worked in? His name was Lewis oscar(Ludwig oserida) he came from Poland he lived prosperity, died at Beckley hospital 3/11/1947 age 73

    1. Shelby, you will have to do lots of research to find the name. Go to familysearch.org and try to find his death record. It might give you a clue. Also look for his Census records as it will give you where he lived in Logan County. Some coal mines had numbers on them which gave where the coal miner lived. You might try and reach out to this site’s coal mine expert Douglas Dempsey once you have more info.

    2. Your grandfather lived in Prosperity which is a couple miles from Cranberry in Raleigh County where the only railroad was in that vicinity. It is likely that he worked in one of the mines operated by The New River Company in that area. It is not likely that he ever worked in Logan County.

      1. Douglas, thanks for your help. Familysearch.org shows that Lewis served in WW I in 1917 and
his employer in 1916 was Cranbury Fuel Company in Cranbury Raleigh County WV. Maybe you can find the name of the mine that he worked in.

        1. Bob,
This website CRANBERRY,WV (coalcampusa.com) has several pictures and this info:
Cranberry, on upper Cranberry Creek in Raleigh County, was one of the few shaft mines in the area. It was originally owned by the Cranberry Fuel Co., and later by the New River Co. The mine, which was down in the Sewell seam, closed in 1958, followed a few months later by the company store. The mine was reopened for a while in the late 1960s and shut down for good in 1973. The New River Co. sold the slate dump to local contractor Bill West, because he wanted the “red dog.”
Also, this website Cranberry WV Coal Mine narrative (rootsweb.com) has other info and photos.
          Good job on the research!

          1. Douglas, thanks for the info. There was also a Sprague mine opened up in 1906 owned by Phineas Sprague, the town was named for him.The New River Company took it over. Hopefully Shelby will return to this site and fill us in about the rest of his family history.

  22. BEATRICE Pannell-Johnson

Mr. Bob, I am looking for a lady that is African-American with the name ot Elizabeth Jones who gave birth to a child in a hospital in Logan, WV in the city of Holden on today’s date either in 1960 or 1961. We cannot tell the exact date via birth certificate. It also states she was 20 years old. That would give her a birthdate of either 1940 or 1941. She also has other children because it states that my relative is child number 5.

    1. Ok, you will have to do your own research on the familysearch.org site as there are many names to choose from.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Norma, the Johnson family are in the 1950 census on the familysearch.org site. Good site for you to do your family research.

        1. Norma, I hope that you have found your familytree chart on the familysearch site. It shows it out to a William born in 1770, Shows Thomas 1795-1861. Shows son of Lee and Lucille ( Harvey ) Johnson – 1919-2001 as being Gary 1951-2014. He was born in Logan and he died in Michigan. He was a truck driver.

          1. Thank you. I am still trying to find when my great uncle Lee Johnson died and where he is buried. I was able to find that Lee Johnson was in the service.
I was able to find info on Lucille and Gary.

          2. Norma, familysearch shows the record of a son, Robert Lee Johnson born and died in 1928 in Marion County WV. Your Great Uncle’s name was Robert. He married Lucille in 1926 in Marion County. Can you tell me where Lucille is buried?

          3. My Great Uncle Lee was born 1905. His wife Lucille Harvey Johnson Caldwell 1918-2001. Lucille was buried at Highland Memorial Garden Cemetery.
In 1963, Lee was still alive and living in Monaville, WV. He was a informant on his brother Charles’ death certificate in 1963.
            Thank you for your help.

          4. Norma, sorry for my errors about your Johnson family. Your Great Uncle was
Lee Johnson as stated in all of the census records. Robert born in 1928 was in a different Johnson family.

          1. Norma, did your Great Uncle Lee Johnson have a middle name? What was the date and where did he enlist in the U.S. Army? You did say that he was a black man?

          2. My Great Uncle Lee Johnson was white. He enlisted in the Army in Huntington, WV on December 14, 1943. I have his Service Number.
If he had a middle name, I haven’t been able to find it.
I know he was born in Lincoln County, WV to Lon and Mary Adeline Chapman Johnson.
He had a brother names Charles Johnson that lived in Logan.

          3. Norma, you might consider writing a letter to the WV. Culture Center, send them all of your info and pay a fee and have them look for the record.

    1. Cindy, doing an online search of address shows that it was sold on 12/20/21 for $ 2,101.00. Seller was Jayman 1233. It was designated as a clandestine drug lab and title will be branded as such. Info can be seen on bid4assets.com.

  27. Hi. My name is Liz and one of my hobbies is to journal. A few years back, a friend of mine gifted me a partially filled journal from 1947. (She purchased it online, Etsy I think.) It was a thoughtful gift and I enjoyed reading some of the entries but I don’t think it is mine to keep. The front page indicates that this journal belonged to Nancy Sue Duff, 527 Stratton Street, Logan, West Virginia. Her phone number was 719. Lol. I don’t have a lot of free time to investigate further, but a quick Ancestry search shows that Nancy was born in 1932, so her diary entries are from when she was 15. Which totally explains all of the cute boy references. Her sister was named Mary Micha Duff, her mother was Elizabeth Duff, and her father’s name was Reese B Duff. It is possible that Nancy’s name was changed to Combs after marriage. But that might have been a bad search match. If this sounds familiar to someone and there are any living relatives that would like to have this diary returned to the family, please comment on this and I will be notified that there has been a response. Thanks!!

    1. Liz, you probably would have better results by putting your request on Facebook. Maybe put a photo with your request.

      1. Thanks for your reply. I am not on Facebook (or any other social media). So if anyone comes across this post randomly with information, feel free to reply to my comment on this page. I’ll hold onto the journal awhile yet.

      2. Liz, try Anywho.com. Also familysearch.com shows Reese Bowen Duff, 1906-1995. Buried in Highland Memory Gardens in Chapmanville,WV. Shows Mary Duff- 1936-2017. Mary Elizabeth Duff- 1908-1995.

        1. Liz ,Nancy Sue Combs died in 2017 and she is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, you can find her obit on the findagrave.org site. Lists her family members, I used the Anywho.com site and found her daughter Laura Combs ( Mcleod ) living in Orlando FL.
Has her home address, so you can write to her about what you found and where.

    2. Liz, I went to school at Man High School with a Reese Duff. He was a year or 2 older than me, would have graduated in 1976 or 1975. He was African American and died some years ago. Since the “father” of the Duff family you write of shares the same name, I am thinking there has to be some relation. I think the Duff family that I knew of lived at Mallory WV on Huff Creek or in the Man WV area. You should be able to find some info on someone in that family if you Google the name and add of Logan County WV.

      1. Joann (Wilson) Felters

Liz and Debra, I knew the Duff family from Mallory and know 2 other families (Miller and Moss) who also grew up in Mallory. I will contact them to see if this is the same family. Do you know if Reese had an older brother named John? My family lived at Elk Creek until abt 1961, which is in the Man, WV area.

  28. Hi, my name is Chris Browning and I am looking for my father, Ron Browning. He and my mother divorced when I was only 4 years old and I haven’t seen or heard from him since. I would really like to reconnect with him. My mother never divulged any information about him other than that he was born in August 1948 in southern West Virginia. I’ve tried searching for records on him and have found very little. He and my mother got married in Knox County, OH in 1973. I was born in Mount Vernon, OH in 1977. Our family then moved to New Kensington, PA sometime before my sister’s birth in October 1979. I believe that he and my mother then divorced sometime in 1982. I found one other piece of info on him showing that, at some point in the last 10+ years, he lived at 1032 Virginia Circle E, in Columbus, OH.

If there is anybody with any information on him or any one that may know someone with info on him, please reach out to me. Thank you so much,

    Chris

    1. Chris, go to Anywho.com, put in his name and click on All States. Also do an online search with his name and year born and where.

      1. Thank you Lisa. I just tried Anywho.com and it only produced 4 results. I’ve also had to have exhausted every possible internet search using different combinations of his name, date of birth, birthplace, and possible residences. Unfortunately, nothing so far.

    2. Chris, There is a book called Burgess, Mullins, Browning, Brown and Allied families by James A. Burgess which may help. 1978,McClain Publishing, Parsons Wv. We have Brownings in the family as well. Many people do in Logan Co.. there were many Brownings in Blair ( Logan co.) in fact a Chris Browning drove a school bus in the 1950’s I remember. So a long shot.. Perhaps a g. or gg grandfather? I think I found the genealogy from the Burgess book on a search years ago..Could contact the publisher if still in business? Incidentally, there is a small Browning cemetery in Blair. Sorry I cant help further but the book has a lot of info on some of those older Logan co. families.

  29. Old Homestead or Family Pictures
Looking for any picture of the Richey Family or residence. Their home was across the River on three mile curve close to the vocational school, across the River from the old Lafferty house . There was once a swinging bridge that was later replaced with a cement railed blacktopped bridge. The homes were torn down when the highway was built . The house would have been occupied by an alternate family after 1958 when Frank Richey’s wife, my Mother , Violet passed away . Ose and Mamie Richey had a home that burned down. My parents lived in the alternate home on the property. Email address violetr1005@gmail.com thank you

  30. Looking for information about the yearbooks that both the hospitals in Logan and Williamson published/printed. My mother worked at both and the yearbooks were lost over the years. They would have been in mid 1930’s – 1940’s . Appreciate any information

Searching for information on the Woods family that resides in Logan County, WV during the 1920s.
I’m specifically, trying to find out more information regarding my grandfather: Gilbert Haven Woods.
He was most likely born in 1919 or close. This is my best guess, according to my mothers birth certificate he was 26 in 1947.
He was married to my grandmother at the time.
    Ruth Lillian Long (maiden name).
They divorced in the early 19050s, and we believe he resided in Indiana after- but, not certain.
Thank you, any information is appreciated.

  42. Travis Scaggs

Searching for the ancestry of JOSEPH SCAGGS of McConnell, Logan County, W.V. He was the father of Will Scaggs (1870-1951) and what is known about Joseph is that he was killed when a tree fell on him, he was a timber man by occupation. I cannot find his ancestry at all and that is my brick wall.

There may be a clue. The original name for Scaggs or Skaggs (either spelling) was “Skeig” originally from the Isle of Man. There was some DNA of a Skaggs or Scaggs in West Virginia that matched DNA with SKEIG in the Isle of Man, but this is only a possible clue. Could Man, W.V. have been named after the Isle of Man ? …Just a thought since the Scaggs/Skeig connection originated from the Isle of Man. Is it possible there were multiple families from the Isle of Man settled there and possibly how Man, W.V. was named ? …Just a little theory until more information can be obtained.

One more clue is that some Scaggs graves were included in the Robinette Cemetery that was moved to Forest Lawn Cemetery for the new road construction.

If anybody can shed light on any of this, or about the ancestry of the Scaggs family going back further than Joseph Scaggs (father of Will Scaggs…1870-1951) I would be grateful to finally break through the brick wall. Joseph Scaggs (1825-1875) was married to Nancy Ann Hinchman (1835-?) and their residence was at or near McConnell.

Thank you in advance for any information anybody may be able to provide!

    1. Travis,do an internet search for the Isle of Man Family History as its about your Scaggs Viking History. There’s a Facebook site up written by Chris Keig. Has nothing to do about the town of Man,WV.

  43. Anything on Rev. Albert Fannin wife Virginia Curry, their daughter my grandmother, Faye passed away from cancer in the 1990’s when I was five. I find little things here and there but they don’t make since and from personal memories from Papa Albert the things don’t add up so if anyone has anything at least maybe just to share maybe a story or two would even be great. Thank you so much
    Sincerely Tasia Shale’

    1. Online search shows Rev. Albert’s Obit for Jan.20, 2014. He had lots of family members you could contact.

  44. Hoping to see if anyone might have information on James A Wooten who was from what I understand, murdered via poisoned sandwich 26th August 1928 by his estranged wife. He’s a direct distant relative and the family very thoroughly hid this story from subsequent generations

  45. My great great great grandfather was Andrew Irvin Vannatfer born in 1868 and passed in 1931 I’m reaching out hoping their maybe a picture of him

    1. Do an online search for them. You will find them on the site Ancient Faces. Gives lots of info about them. Also Wiki Tree shows the Marcum Genealogy.

  46. I am looking for any information about Steve Puskas and his family. Between the years 1904 and 1910 his wife and daughter were murdered in a robbery. Steve Puskas was my 2nd great grandfather. I do not know his wife or daughters name. Steve was living in Holden in 1910 according the census that year with his two sons Steve and August. Steve was a coal miner I am assuming he work for Island Creek.

    1. I did some digging on Ancestry and Newspapers.com. I found a tree with information about this family, including a sad story about father Steve kidnapping a girl (Rosa Nagy) in Colorado because she looked like his murdered daughter. According to the article, written 20 May 1915 in the Sheboygan Press, his wife and daughter were murdered 7 years prior, putting the deaths in 1908. No names were listed. But the two sons (August and Steve) were put into a home in Detroit and later adopted. I looked for a follow up story about Steve being found and Rosa returned to her father, but no such luck. Here is the link to the 1915 news article. https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/tree/118760125/person/390174062721/media/e429655c-9375-43ed-b54c-42d8153925de

      1. That is either my tree or August’s family tree. We have traded messages and we are both at dead ends. Steve and August were adopted into different houses.

  47. I’m looking for any information (newspaper articles) about a murder/suicide on December 22, 1930. It involved my Great-Grandmother (Mary) and her two young boys – Michael & Charles.

    1. What was her last name? When was she born? Did this happen in Logan County WV? Have you put the question on the Facebook site? Try contacting Brandon Kirk on Facebook.

      1. Thanks for the reply Bob. I believe Mary Cherepanick was born in 1899 in Austria. She died on 12/22/1930 in Logan County along with her sons – Michael and Charles. I don’t use Facebook

        1. Cherepanick is likely an English version of a Polish or Ukrainian surname. “Austria” was likely the part of Poland or Ukraine today that used to be “Galicia.” This is not the same as the area in Spain with the same name. You can look for the “Partitions of Poland” for more information about the history of this region. Poland was a divided country from roughly 1772 until 1918. Galicia extended along the south of Poland from the western side (current Germany border) to the eastern side (Tarnopol, Ukraine). The surname in Polish is likely something like Czerniepanik, where the CZ makes the CH sound in English. However, there is no current surname in Poland with anything like that spelling. So my guess is that this is Ukrainian, and the spelling would be in Russian letters but would translate to something like Chernepanik (without the extra C). So very close to the spelling used today. I hope this helps. Documents that will give you hometown information are: Social Security application (if they lived past 1935), ship manifest (if they came over after 1906), naturalization documents (after 1906), and sometimes church (not civil) marriage records.

        2. You’re welcome Michael, you can find Mary and her sons death records at the familysearch.org site. Records show they all died in Whitman,WV. Mary shot both boys then herself. They are all buried in Saint James Cemetery and Mausoleum in Woodbridge,N.J. Her husband George 1891 to 1965. Both Mary and George were born in Austria as were her parents. Mary maiden name was Charky.

          1. Thanks again. I see the Death Record but I don’t see any mention of the shootings. Where did you see that?

  61. When was” Blair” (the town of) established & who named Blair Wv. My GGF Thomas Blair
was in Cabin Creek in 1890. Looking for any connection . Thanks

    1. Effective January 16, 1914, the SENG U.S. Post Office was renamed BLAIR POST OFFICE. The 1913 USGS topo map shows the village of Seng at the location now known as Blair. However, the 1898 map shows Seng located about 4 miles or so north of where it was shown in 1913.

      1. Thanks , Douglas. If the land & town known as “SANG” was sold to someone named “Blair” would their be a record somewhere of that sale. ?

      2. I lived in Blair. And yes about 4 miles down was called seng. Picture the lower end of Blair and the area after leaving Blair headed for the schools. That’s Seng

        1. Elaine, I am the granddaughter of Daw Smith, my father was Virgil Smith. I can’t find out anything about my grandfather Daw, only that he was a lumberman x buried at Seng Camp. If there’s anything at all you could tell me about him or my grandmother Victoria I would greatly appreciate it.

    2. My research shows the namesake of Blair, WV being John Smith Blair (b. 1798 d. 1860), the father of the first democratically elected sheriff of Logan, William Harrison Blair (b. 1824 d. 1903). William Harrison Blair’s first wife was Elizabeth Chafin, likely related to Don Chafin, the sheriff during the Battle of Blair Mtn.

      Hope this helps!

  62. To whom it may concern:

Searching for anyone who might know of the situation in which King Family descendants were adopted into the Morrisett Family, probably as many as 100 years ago. Helpful would be to know if any King Family relatives or Morrisette Family relatives have access to documentation about how this transpired and why. If you know even the slightest detail with regard to what happened, even if it comes down to you as a family story, without attribution, it would please the family to know what you know, so that the answers to lifelong questions of poverty, separation and kindness could be resolved.

    1. John, did this happened In Logan County WV?
      What were the years?

  66. Kassondra Farrell

Hello, ——–I am looking for any information on my great grandfather; whose real birth name I still don’t know.
I know very little to no proven details about his life in West Virginia.
Thought to had been born in either Boone Co. or Logan Co.
Between 1898 – 1900 but could be different.
He was a coal miner, a nickname he went by was Big Boy.
It was said he became involved in a shooting incident in Mingo Co.
which led to him fleeing West Virginia and starting life over in Kentucky.
‘Big Boy’ supposedly shot a man off truss bridge, the man he shot was said to be his half uncle. This was either around the time of the coal wars or shortly after; circa 1920s.
It was also said he had married in WV and had a son and daughter. This was new info to my father, I would really like to know more about my new possible great aunt and uncle also.
The name he choose when he moved to Kentucky was Bryant Ferrell/Farrell I have no clue if he changed his last name also or just the first which makes finding solid hints difficult.
Death Record has father as Ancy Farrell and mother as Sally Hatfield.
Not sure when he married my Great Grandmother in Kentucky but I know they had their first child in 1927 so he left West Virginia before then.
A few other names popped up while researching those names were
    – Pearl
    – William
    – Robert
    – Wilson
But I still have nothing on him prior to coming to Kentucky.

    1. You should be looking for records in KY.
Shows that Bryant Farrell was born in WV.
in 1901 & died in KY. in 1959.
His father was Andy & Mother was Sally.

      1. The findagrave site shows that Bryant Farrell is
buried in Riverside Cemetery in Perry County KY.
My error on his father’s name was Ancy nor Andy.

The Farrell name is Irish. Many arrived in the USA
in the 1600’s, going to Virginia.

To find your family you need to see if they arrived
        through Ellis Island.

Then you can go back in time by using the
        family search site.
Lots of work for you to do if you really want to know.

        1. Carrie Ferrell Flick

I’m not sure if we are related or not. My maiden name is Ferrell. My dad was from Logan County. His father’s name was Robert. I would love to hear from you.

    1. Missy, you can find your family in the
1940 census at the familysearch.org site.

      Forest Lawn Cemetery.

And just to throw you a little loop. Your Great Grandfather (10 times) was one of the first Starr’s from our family to land in Pennsylvania from Meath, Ireland. Before that They were from Beer, Devon, England. And the family house is still there, standing. Anyway, Have a great one…

    2. Ricky, was your grandfather Thomas Starr married to Nellie Baisden? If so, your dad was my 4th cousin 1x removed. There are other Starr relatives, but I will have to check those connections. I do have some questions about the Starr relatives and will get back to you when I find the right one’s.

  78. My dad told me before he died that I may have a half sister born to Ruby Gore, probably of Logan County WV. I believe she would’ve been born in the early to mid 1950s. Evidently, Ruby was a girlfriend of my dad’s father, Ted Ellis, but she also had relations with my teenage father, Harold Ellis, so the child could either be my Aunt or my half sister. Strange, I know, but I’m not making this up and I’d like to find out more, if possible. This is all of the information that I have on her. Thank you for any help you can be with this.

    1. Pam, go to familysearch.org to

  81. Natasha Davis-Sanders

Hi. I have been using ancestry.com to trace my family roots. My dad was born in Charleston, WV, but it appears that my grandfather has a World War II draft card stating that he lived in Logan, WV. It has my great-grandfather listed on the draft card as Mr. Alf Davis
    Grandfather was Nathaniel Hamlin Davis
    Grandmother Ollie Mae Preston-Davis
My dad is Nathaniel Hamlin Davis, Jr.
These are all African Americans. Was there a certain section of Logan that the colored folk lived in during the 1940s and 1950s??

    1. Hello Natasha, in those days everyone
lived where ever they could afford to live.

Any chance you could post your family
photos on this website if they lived
      in Logan County?

  85. Researching families of Lillie (Henderson) and Richard Jeffries (Jefferies or Jeffreys) and Katie (Henderson) and Ross Benton and Katie’s 2nd husband John Vassar. They lived in Logan Co., WVA but were originally from Georgia. Prior to her 2nd marriage , Katie’s children were shown in a county black orphans’ home while Katie herself boarded with her sister Lillie. Lillie lost several of her children to tuberculosis. Lillie died October 1931 by suicide. Her husband later remarried. Katie lost her 1st husband to tuberculosis and she later died of it also in 1934. Katie’s 2nd husband was murdered just weeks after their marriage in October 1931. From Lillie and John’s death certificates it appears that it may have been a murder-suicide. Looking for records or newspaper accounts to shed light on the events leading to their deaths. PJ Achramowicz- daughter.of.the.golden.horde@gmail.com

  86. Anyone here ever heard of “Huston Holler” supposedly near Sand Lick? If so, do you know what Huston it was named for? My Grandfather was Edward Huston sometimes called “Kyle”. Had two half brother Corbett Starling and another half brother but don’t know what first name was but he too was a Starling. Granpa died in 1965 in Crab Orchard and is buried there. I can find him back to 1910 located in Tazewell County VA with his young Wife Nora Steele. I believe we have records somewhere that he was born in Sand Lick.

    1. Sand Lick is in Mercer County WV.

    1. Hey Pamela! There is a Jesse James Perry that can be found on Familysearch.org. If you type in his name, and then put “Logan, West Virginia” in the place of residence box, a couple of searches will come up, one of them I believe is your grandfather. You can also find them in the census. If you are interested in extending this further, Family Search is a great place to start…. Carlo C.

    2. Marcy L Sullivan

We may be related somehow. I remember family reunions when I was very young in Athalia, OH and hearing stories about the brothers Jesse James and Frank and something being robbed and them hiding in my great aunts barn and one of them ,Frank I think, impregnating her daughter. And there’s a lot of Perry’s in the cemetery where my grandmother Spicie (Everett) Adkins Martin is buried

  89. I am Jonathan Blake Wilson 30 years old .son of Larry lee Wilson of Logan county West Virginia , His father was hestel reineer Wilson and mother was Irma collins( Wilson ) I play the five string banjo In the old way and I feel a true connection with these mountains and the music of the past that used to be so openly heard and now is only found in archives or library websites . I am curious if anyone knows any information about The Logan county legendary banjo player aunt Jenny Wilson . I am trying to figure out why I was drawn so closely and wholeheartedly to this old old music and as far as I know I have no real musical aunts uncles grandpa or grandmas. Usually in the tradition the music is passed on orally and by folk of the mountains . I now live in Chattanooga Tennessee and no one has taught me this music , I learned by ear and by watching others play it

    1. Hi Jonathan… Very impressive about your musical talents! Aunt Jenny Wilson was born c. 1901 – and lived in Peach Creek for a good portion of her life. She was known as a “gravely-throated [singer]” and an amazing person.
If you look at the link below, you can find some information on her. If you go to familysearch.org, you can find information on her parents, and her family history.

      http://www.wvculture.org/goldenseal/summer16/auntjenny.html#:~:text=Virginia%20%E2%80%9CAunt%20Jennie%E2%80%9D%20Wilson%20(,storytellers%20in%20West%20Virginia%20history

      1. Thank you much ! I’ve heard many stories about her and she attended a lot of old dances where she played the banjo . Somewhere I read that her husband was named James Wilson and I just can’t stop wondering if maybe James Wilson was perhaps one of my kin . I have family living on peach creek still to this day ! My father has told me many stories about walking miles into Logan to buy dresses and stuffed animals for my mother when they were dating and he would even hitchhike all the way to eastern Kentucky Just to see her . He plays guitar and has a gospel group in Ohio where they play and record and travel to different churches to perform , god bless and thank you for reaching out ! Any more good stories you have about Jenny id love to hear Um !

        1. You are very welcome. It was fun learning about her on my end! Interesting that you have family still in Peach Creek – If you have any interest in genealogy – perhaps you try tracing your family tree, and tracing James Wilson or Jenny’s family trees and see if there is a common relative. Wouldn’t that be cool?! Blessings to you, too! Carlo

  92. Rebecca Staten

Hi. I am looking for any information on the Staten’s and the Shepard’s my grandmother was Maxine Shepard and my grandfather was Hi Staten. Looking to trace my family tree. Please email rsrebeccas6@gmail.com. I cannot seem to find anything about my grandmother. I know they lived in Logan. That’s all I know.

    1. Marsha Dunn Hennis

I grew up on Crooked Creek. I knew the Statens that ran the little grocery store at the foot of Peach Creek. I was young so I did not know their first names, but I know that had a son named Marvin Staten, who went by Gig. I believe he is around there still. I wish I could help more, but if this helps in any way I am happy. My name is Marsha Dunn Hennis, daughter of Oval and Virginia Dunn, email is grae48@gmail.com

      1. Marsha, my name is Henry “Knocker Chafin”. My fathers name was Gene Chafin and we lived beside Oval and Ginny across the railroad tracks about half way up Peach Creek holler. We are currently very close friends with Dee Dunn from Chapmanville Wva. She was Ovals sister or niece. My dad and Oval worked at the coal mines.

        1. Hello Henry, was the name of the
coal mine in Peach creek, Hitchman
          Coal Company?

Did you know Walter Ray Johnson
and his wife Matilda in the mid
          1950s.They had six children.

          1. Bob, I’m not familiar with the “Hitchman” name but the Hutchinson Coal Company had operations at Peach Creek. (Hutchinson also had operations on Rum Creek.)

          2. Doug, thanks for your input
but I was asking the question
to Henry since he lived in Peach Creek.

Online research shows a WV Court case
on Dec.10th 1917 that ruled in favor of
the Hitchman Coal & Coke Company
            against John L.Lewis.

You can find the case at this site
            http://www.Law.Cornell.edu.text or
            put in the above info.

This confirms for me that Walter Johnson
worked at the coal mine & he had
the right info on his 1918 Draft Card.
He states it was in Logan County WV.

Also at WVgenweb.org you can find
a list of Logan County coal mines.

            For Peach Creek.it shows
            the E.R. Johnson Coal Co.
            & Chafin-Jones Heatherman Coal Co.
Maybe someone made an error in not
            listing the Hutchington Coal mine
            in Peach Creek.

There is a photo of the Hutchington
            Family Coal Mine in Fairmont,WV.
            at WVhistoryview.org.

          3. Bob,
I read the court case you referred to and it appears that the Hitchman Coal & Coke Company’s operations were in the northern part of the state near Benwood in Marshall County. The suit involved the UMWA and pertained to “yellow dog” contracts. The suit did not involve John L. Lewis but did involve T. L. Lewis, an official of the union. Inasmuch as the case was in the U.S. Supreme Court, any ruling would have covered mines in Logan County also.

In a 1921 book listing all the coal mines in WV by county, there are these listings for Logan County as:
E.R. JOHNSON COAL MINING CO.—Johnson Mines Nos. 1,2 and 3——Location-Hughey
PEACH CREEK COAL CO.—–Peach Creek Mine——Location-Hughey

The Johnson Mines Nos. 1 and 2 are mentioned several times in the 1916 WV Geological Survey, once about their production tonnage for 1912.

I have looked at some old maps of the Peach Creek area and saw a map titled:
            PROPERTY AND MINE MAP
            CHAFIN JONES HEATHERMAN COAL CO.
PEACH CREEK LOGAN CO W VA.
            SCALE 1”= 200’ 400’
            C-3 JULY 1925

I also saw a mine map showing the left side of Crooked Creek with a note on it titled:
            BETHLEHEM MINES CORP
            FORMERLY
            JEWELL RIDGE COAL CORPORATION
            MINE No. 2 ALMA SEAM
            SCALE 1”= 200’ JUNE 1944

Another map of a mine located in the ridge between Peach Creek and Crooked Creek was titled:
            JEWELL RIDGE COAL CORPORATION
            PEACH CREEK CHILTON MINE
            SCALE 1” 400’ AUGUST 1948

With so much consolidation and buyouts of coal companies and successive mining in other seams over a several year period by different parties, it is difficult to determine what companies were operating at Peach Creek (or any other area of Logan County) at any particular time.

  105. I am looking for any information on my Great Grandparents: Rosie (Rosa) Belle Messer (I believe she was born in WV in or around Logan, Monaville area) 1902-1974 & Andy Evans, Martin Co. KY 1893-1958. I’m also looking for their daughter Pearly Evans my Grandmother. I do not have a birth or death date. I was told she passed away in her 30’s maybe around 1970. All 3 lived in the Logan area until their passing. I have hit brick walls with all 3. Andy I was able to find his service records, death cert and tombstone request. Rosie very limited information but i did find her grave on Find a Grave. Pearly I am not able to find anything on her. No birth record, census, marriage or death cert. I do know she was married to Jessie James Elliott. They had 3 children Rosemary, twin Boys, James & Jessie Carl Elliott. Any information you are willing to share is greatly appreciated.
    Have a Wonderful day

      1. Thanks Bob, I have exhausted, My Heritage, Family Search, Family Tree DNA & Ancestry. I just keep hitting a brick wall.

        1. Earl, if you are truly hitting that brick wall, then I would highly recommend that you download your raw DNA file from FTDNA and upload to the other websites that have DNA. Uploading to Gedmatch, in particular, is one way to break through. But I just had huge luck helping an adoptee find his birth family by uploading to MyHeritage. Some people (maybe like you) only do the DNA test on one website but miss comparing your DNA to people on the other websites. Let me know if you need help with this.

          1. Thank you Sandy, I appreciate the Gedmatch information. I have taken 2 DNA test with 2 different companies. I had the standard autosomal test with Ancestry and the Y35 on FTDNA. Since the Y35 is geared towards my paternal side of the family & I am looking for my maternal side would you recommend that I download my raw data from Ancestry? I am completely green when it comes to DNA.

    1. Earl, I’m glad that Sandy is able to help you.
      familysearch.org shows a 1930 census record
for Andy & Rose. Andy was a Pumpman in
      the coal mines.

Shows that Andy was 40 & Rose was 26 in 1930.
A record for Rose shows birth July 15, 1902
      & death January 1974 in Mt.Gay,WV.

What cemetery is she buried in?

      1. Bob,
Rosie is buried at Chauncey Cemetery in Chauncey West Virginia. I was able to locate the 1930’s census record a while ago (on the next page of the census their children are listed, their is a Son Allen listed as being 10. He was born before they were married so I have tried unsuccessfully tried to find who his mother is, more family mysteries) I could not locate them during the 1940’s census. I was also able to locate 3 infant birth/death records in the early to mid 40’s. No record of my Grandmothers Pearly’s birth in the 1930’s or 40’s. No birth or death record for her at all, She is just a mystery to me.
From the information I have been able to gather, Andy followed his older brother Noah from KY to WV to work in the coal mines. He then left for WWI came home married Rosie, started a family and passed away.

        1. Earl, some other info for you to consider.
Try Anywho.com for the Evans name
in Logan as there are a few living there.

On the familysearch site, I found a
          Jessie James Elliott, b.Feb.21,1934.
          Possible death April 1, 2000 in Lenore,WV.
Anywho does list a few family members.

  107. I am searching for information on george robert Adam’s he came to logan county around 1900 from northern ky he lived in omar and is listed as barber but not on any census. Why would someone come to a coal town in 1900 he was not a miner. Maybe he changed his name but why did people in coal towns not want to be counted on the census.

    1. Dan, many of my relatives were WV coal miners.
They arrived in the USA in the 1900s from Hungary.
They moved around a lot seeking better paying jobs,
      thus missing the census.

According to a record found at familysearch.org
your George Adams was born in 1874 in KY.
He is in the 1920 census as a barber & he lived
in a boarding house. He cut hair to make a
better living & probably didn’t want to work
      in the coal mines.

Many coal miners died from Typhoid Fever &
      Black Lung disease.

      1. Hi Bob, do you know if there are any records of miners who died from Black Lung disease? I am trying to find a death record for my grandfather Franklin McGuire b. about 1904, place of death unknown. My grandmother Pansy Neace received compensation for his death, which she distributed to family members, including me. Looking for any McGuire info. Thank you

        1. Hello Rosa, you would have to do
an online search for the Black Lung
          question.

          Familysearch.org shows him as
Frank in the 1940 census, in Wayne Co.
Shows all family members, his mother
          was Casbie or Cosby Williamson.

You will have to set up an account on
the site to search for his D.R.

        2. Rosa, ok I just found your GG Pansy Browning
on the findagrave site. She is buried in
          Webb Cemetery in Wayne Co.

On the right hand side of the page you
will see USA, click on that & put in your
          GG Frank’s name & B.D.
You will see four names born in 1904 &
          different D.D.

You can also search the other sites on
          the page.

          1. Thank you Bob. I did sign up for Family Search. Also I do have a few family pictures, which I will post.

          2. Ok Rosa, did you find your GM
            grave on the findagrave site?
Just wondering why your GF isn’t
buried in Webb cemetery with her?

  108. Amber Dawn Stratton

Hello, I am searching for more information about my family Sylvin Killen and his wife Tennessee (Watts) Killen. They lived in Henlawson, Logan county, west Virginia. They were my great grandparents. I know they owned the little store, but was wondering if anyone had any other information on them and possibly even some pictures?

    1. Amber, lots of records at familysearch.org.
      Maybe you already have them.
Interesting also that my Dad Joe Sr.
owned a store in Henlawson in 1942 for 1 year
before moving to Cherry Tree. The store was
a Post Office in 1988 when I visited the area.

    2. Gregory Stratton

I’m searching for history of the Strattons. My father was William Stratton, son of John Milton Stratton and Lillie Adkins. There is a Stratton Street. Which Stratton was that street named for? Which other Strattons are still in the area?

      1. Gregory, search online for article written
by Dwight Williamson about Stratton family
as the street was named for a William.
Check Anywho.com for any in area.

      2. Valerie Nelson

I have a small bit of info on the Staton family that i found in among my husbands family records. They tie into the Nelson family along with the Chaffins and Farley’s. Would be glad to email what ever i have to you.
Please feel free to contact me at weeirishlass7206@gmail.com

      3. My grandfather (my mother’s father) was Everett Stratton. His parents were William Jesse Stratton (Williams parents were Jasper and Laura (Sperry) Stratton) and Virginia (Buskirk) Stratton. There are tons of Strattons still in the area, but unfortunately when my grandfather and my mom’s cousin (Dreama Adkins) passed away I lost connection with them.

  109. Barbara Clements

Hello, I’m looking for relatives of my Great Aunt Elizabeth (lizzie) Burnell born in Winchendon MA who died in Logan WV in 1988 at 95 years old. She might have relatives by the name of Drury.

  110. Looking for Information on Winfred Browning who married Dora Asbury on 27 December 1894. I am researching the Asbury family and can find no information on him after she passed in 1899′ Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
    judy_branham20002yahoo.com

  111. I am helping a disabled friend with her very difficult tree. Her ancestor was Jan/John Sowinski/Sawinski (born in Poland), and he lived in Logan WV as a miner. He was 40 years old and married a 14 year old woman Helen who was pregnant. They were living together in the 1930 census with their child Helena, born in 1928. Also living with John was his brother Frank and Frank’s son Frank Jr. Then we cannot find any information about any of these people (other than Frank Jr) after 1930. We have tried all the usual sources, Ancestry, MyHeritage, Mormons, newspapers, many others, but we really need the church records of the marriage in 1928 and baptism in 1928. We have the vital records side already. We are also hoping that there were some kind of newsletters (perhaps not on the newspaper sites yet), maybe something at the local public libraries that we don’t have access to because we live out of state. We have failed at hearing from the public libraries via the internet. ANY advice is greatly appreciated. sandy10m@yahoo.com

    1. Sandy,John married Hellen Johnson in
1928 in Logan,WV. She was born in Ohio
& was 16 at the time. Since he was a
coal miner they might have moved to
      another state.
      The record is at familysearch.org.

      1. Thanks! We have all this information and are looking for what happened to any of these 3 people after the 1930 census. We cannot find anything on any of them. Thanks for your help!

        1. Sandy, if you know the name of
the town where John was from
& want to check to see if the family
went back there to live as they
          might have bought some land
there. You can contact the Poland
          Church Directiories online.

In 1987 I made contact with my
          Hungarian relatives by writing to
          a group in Budapest Hungary,
who gave me the name of a
          Priest in Rede Hungary.
          My relatives hadn’t heard from
          anyone since 1947.

      1. Thanks for the info! Unfortunately, the Polish surname Sowinski is about the equivalent of Johnson in the US, so there are lots of people with that name. I was hoping someone on here directly knew about 40 year old Jan/John Sowinski and his 14 year old bride Helen and their daughter Helen. We are using DNA in the hopes that someone shows up related to Helen, but nothing yet.

        1. You are welcome. Hope that someone
on this site will make a connection for you.

Lots of coal miners lefft WV in the
1940s and went to Michigan for
          better paying jobs.

          1. I am looking for info on Mae or May Harris who was the wife of B Harris, the owner of the mercantile.

  112. Worth Browning

Hello, I am trying to trace the Nunley side of my family. My great Grandpa was Worth Nunley. He lived in the holler above Cora. He was born in Tennessee in or around 1888.
He moved herewith his parents and is seen in the 1910 census in Chapmanvill living with his parents Joe and Addie. I can’t find a death Cert for Joe. He also went as Joseph and WJ. He died between 1930 and 1938. He was from Grundy Tennessee. As my help would be super appreciated.
    Thanks

      1. Ted, thanks for doing such a wonderful
job for Worth. Hoping that Worth will post
his family on the Nunley tree on the
        family search site.

    1. Worth, you might have the wrong info.
Go to familysearch.org & set up an account.
Shows your Worth Nunley born in 1887 in Tennessee.
Then in WV shows a Joe Nunley D.R. in 1964.
He was a coal miner, wife Ada.
He is buried in Highland Memory Gardens.

  113. Sally Sims Stokes

I am trying to determine whether Mary Ruth Chambers, who graduated in 1939 from Logan High School and attended Marshall College in Huntington with my late mother, Jean Ashby Johnson (Sims), is the “Mary Ruth” whom my mother mentions in her WW II memoir about service in the WAVES in Washington, D.C.

According to my mother’s memoir, a “Mary Ruth” who was also a Marshall alumna traveled with my mother and another Marshall graduate named Wanda from Huntington to Northampton, Mass., in March 1943 to begin Officers’ Training at Smith College.

I have checked a number of sources including Ancestry, but the name Mary Ruth Chambers yields so many matches that I am afraid I am not steering myself to the right Mary Ruth!

If anyone might know who “Wanda” was, that would also be very helpful. I am still searching for her in the available yearbooks (they were not actually published every year).

My mother and Mary Ruth both appear in the Marshall yearbook sophomore class section in 1941.
This is interesting, because my mother received her B.A. in 1942.

This is my mother’s obituary, for reference.

Thanks to all for any help you can provide!

  114. Trying to find more information on Guy Ellis. He was born around 1827. Have heard that he is the son of Phillip and Elizabeth (Hinchman) Ellis but have also heard that he may actually be the son of Christina Ellis and Isaac Browning but given the Ellis name. Any insight on this would be most appreciated. Also trying to figure out his wife’s true last name. Logan county marriage record says Roberts but on their son Nathaniel’s death certificate it lists his mother as Frances Robertson. Thanks Rosanna Armbrust zany71@gmail.com

    1. Rosanna, please look at the post on Jan.24
by Ted. The website he has used is:
      https://newspaperarchive.com.
I used the site & found an obit for
Joseph Scaramuzzino in a research project
that I’m doing. Still searching for a photo of
the S.Joe store in Mt. Gay WV. Hoping that
someone will post it to this website.

      1. Helen Bigler Starr

Bob, I have a photo of my sisters and I standing in front of the store around 1952, I believe. It’s packed away, but ilI’ try to find it and oost it.

        1. I’m looking for any information or family related to my grandfather, Delmar Gibson. I know that he has passed. Children are my mom, Patricia Holley and she has 2 brothers Ernie and Larry Gibson. He had a brother named Herb who passed away i believe from cancer in the 80’s. Herb had a wife named Wanda. They lived in the Logan/Mingo County areas. I don’t know much about my family, but would love to connect.

          1. Vicki, familysearch.org shows a
Delmar Gibson in the 1940 census.
            Born in 1937 in WV.
Father was Carl who was a
            coal miner. Wife Reginia.
You will have to set up an account
            to do your research.
            You might check at Anywho.com
            for relatives.

  115. Am looking for any information you might have on my grandfather, John Stacey. who married Julie Sizemore in 1900. Really would like to find out what his Mothers name was and where she was from. Contact me at lindakayg@yahoo.com. My name was Linda Kay Lester, and my Moms name was Lula Stacey. Thanks Linda

  116. Hello All. I’m wondering if anyone can assist with details about my father whom I’ve never met – Paul Saunders of Logan, WV. (His twins sister’s name is Paula.) I’ve recently learned that I have at least two older half-sisters (by different moms) who’ve also never met him – June and MaryLou.

June and I have recently connected through 21andMe and were shocked to find we were so closely related – we had no idea! While we may never know the reason Paul fathered children and stayed out of our lives, we really want to know about Paul and the Saunders side of the family tree because it’s a part of who we are.

Thanks for sharing – I truly appreciate it. Best, Sharon.

    1. Sharon, go to Anywho.com,
      many Saunders names listed
      as living in Logan,WV.
      Maybe you can call them
to see if they knew your father.

    2. Sharon, you can also put in your search,
Paul Saunders Family Tree & you will find
the Wiki Tree site which lists many
      Paul Saunders names.

  117. Hi my name is Sandy Tomblin Goins. And I am searching for Albert Tomblin family tree. His son Lloyd Tomblin is my dad. Daddy was born Apr 1920

  118. I am looking for any information on the Woosley (Jesse and Ethel (Sullens)) family or the Levi (Michael and Margaret (Pitzaka)). Levi children all had nicknames.

    1. I’m not sure, but I know that cotton top Hatfield was a relation, and his grandmother lived for years in Mingo West Virginia. I was adopted when I was 2 years old, but never knew him.

      1. Angela, if you go to familysearch.org site
& set up a account, you can search the
Census & other records that should
lead you to your relatives. Yes its a lot
of work but its worth it.

  119. My father was Charles Mounts. I am trying to find any relatives that knew him. He died in 2016 I think, and I never met him, and would like to know what kind of man he was. I know he knew I was born, because his name was on my birth certificate when I finally found it only a few years ago. I never knew him, and would like any information. Thank you everyone.

  120. Hi,

    My name is G.G.

The parents of Walter Parrish are Kieffer Parrish and Nannie McClure. Nora McNobb and McKinley Laughlin are Josephine Laughlin parents. They resided in Holden, West Virginia. The family moved North at some point New Jersey, yet the family may have remained in West Virginia. They had a son name Kenny Parrish a/k/a KP a/k/a Hussain Aziz who passed away on 9/16/2017. He never spoke much about his parents or family. I believe he had two (2) brothers on the father side (Walter Parrish). 1. I saw the newspaper article. I would really like to know the rest of the story. Rush Slate was my great grandfather. I have only heard pieces of the story and people in my family don’t talk much

          1. Ted, thanks for the story, very
            clear to read. Just wondering
the name of the site that you
were able to obtain it from?

          2. Thank you for your feedback. The article that I saw was different than the ones that you directed me to. I don’t really understand how someone admits to premeditated murder and did not serve life in prison. I do understand that there is a different type of justice that is excepted among mountain folk. “He needed killing” is acceptable in some parts. I can only imagine that Kyle Browning‘s family would have to be upset, possibly embarrassed, at the very least grieving his death. This was a very small community and certainly people had to talk. I imagine that even kids would talk at school. I was told by my mother that she truly loved Kyle One of the sons has a middle name of “Kyle “.

        1. Hi Bob, For some reason your question regarding the name of the site where I obtained the news paper articles and Catherine’s last post as well never showed a reply link so I thought I would answer using one of your last posts on the same subject.

I also tried to use the wordpress.com reader with my followed sites but that didn’t work either. Seems this site (loganwv.us) takes a long time on occasion to update the posts, not sure why though unless the moderator reads all comments before allowing the post to be live.

To answer your question I used a site called https://newspaperarchive.com I have access to this site and a number of other paid sites that I use while doing research on my family tree. I will be glad to help others if possible in the future with this kind of assistance.

          1. I am not aware of any long delays approving first-time visitor comments. Sometimes comments go to spam and I don’t notice them immediately. Sorry, but this site doesn’t have an admin on duty 24 hours a day. There is just me and I can’t spend every waking moment watching the site.

          2. Admin,
It was not my intent to make you feel as though you needed to “spend every waking moment watching the site” if I did I apologize but was only making a statement as to my delay in responding, not saying that the admin of the site was not doing his/her job. I believe you are doing a good work for the citizens past and present of Logan County by having this site. Please accept my apologies if my comment made you feel that way.

          3. I am sorry for my initial response. A plugin update broke the site a couple of weeks ago. I had to use a backup to restore it. This was probably the cause of your missing comments.

          4. Hi Admin,
No worries. I appreciate your assistance and the fact you are willing to keep the site up and running. I know it is not always an easy task with so many things to accomplish daily (I have had to do it in the past)…

          5. Ted,thanks for the link,its a very
good site. Please help out on this
site when you have time. Lots of
            people always looking for info.

    1. Catherine, his D.R. is at familysearch.org.
      Shows 1904-1933, shot in Omar.
You might do an online search or
do research at the WV. Division of Culture
      website.
Maybe call the Logan Banner & try to
      contact Dwight Williamson.

  122. Bernie Dempsey (Jack Dempsey’s older brother) from Holden married my great Aunt Mary from Maple Wi in Denver we think. They had two children that I know of. One was Florence Dempsey born in 1926 and Wilfred Harrison Dempsey born in 1930 both in Denver Colorado I think. Bernie died in 1935 from Miners lung and his widow Mary died in 1969 in Denver. I have a magazine photo of Bernie, Jack Mary Florence and Wilfred taken in 1927 in Denver. Looking for information on any of these Dempsey’s is buried or non existent. I have personal photos of Mary and Jack Dempsey in Denver in April 1931 with my grandmother (Marys Sister) and a photo of Ida Estelle Dempsey with my grandmother and my uncle taken in Denver I also have personal photos of Mary and Florence with my father in Denver in 1943 when my father was there for Gunnery school. If anybody can help me with Bernie’s birth date I am doing my family history and appreciate it.

    1. Al, the best to you in doing your family history.
Put in Jack Dempsey in your search, find his
Bio online. It has a few lines about Bernie.
See that Hiram & Celie were the parents.
Go to familysearch.org & put in Hiram in WV.
See the 1880 census as it shows the family.

  123. My Mother, Josephine Raymond was born in Mingo West Virginia on Oct 3,1927. She didn’t know her father but I’m suspecting it’s Joseph Raymond. Josephine Raymond’s Mother was Mae Smith. They later moved to Sydney Kentucky. My Grandmother Mae was supposedly shot in a jealous domestic outbreak in some bar I’m told when then my Mother, Josephine was only 9 years old. That would be 1936 Does anyone have any info or memory link to this story. I know my mother was born at home with a midwife as they were very poor & was very common then. Roy died in an auto crash in Fibre, MI, on January 30, 1960 along with the driver of his vehicle. Two Airmen in his vehicle survived the crash. Two individuals in my vehicle died & I was the sole survivor in my vehicle. I was able to talk to her and show her where the accident occurred and rode with her family to St. Ignace, MI to get additional details from the MI State Police who investigated the head-on collision. Who is Sidney Allen Jr? All of the kids with the exception of Juanita moved to Indiana. Sidney had 2 kids- Susan & Marvin (Unless there is another we never knew- who was Jr mom?). All of the Allen Children have passed now- very sad. Elsie remarried Grover Mullins in KY and had 2 children- Charles & Wanda (Wanda is my mom).

Do have any pictures of George and Elsie or the kids or know any one that does. I have been doing research on the cemetery where George and the 2 babies- Lindberg & James were buried (RUM Creek – Chambers) and Im told its overgrown and the person I was talking to said no markers for these names.

I am looking for information about my 3x great grandmother, Anne Workman. Her daughter, my great great grandmother, Josephine, married William Crum and they lived most of their lives in Martin County, Ky. I found Anne and Josephine on the 1860 census for Logan, Virginia (on the census it says Lonsville). According to that census, Anne was born about 1805 and Josephine was born about 1844 (she was 14 on that census record). They are living by themselves, close to Asa P. McCoy. I’m trying to find where they came from, more information on who might have been Josephine’s father. I do have her death certificate from ancestry. com and they have transcribed the fathers name as “Made Carter”, however after looking closely at it, I believe the first name may be Mose. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!!

        1. Diane Vinson-Childers

Glad to find you! I was digging around in the Ferrell bones. J.B. Steele married Lillian Pricilla Ferrell-Steele. James Bennett’ Steele’s father Charles Grover married Olive (Ollie) Vinson my Grandfather Alvah’s sister. J.B. and Pricilla I found at St. Sylvan’s Cemetery at Clearwater (Pinellas County) FL. He died in 2001 and she died 2002. I was wanting to connect her to her family. If you find anything let me know. I remember you mentioning Arnold Christian & Phoebe Ellis. I looked through the Peach Creek & Crooked Creek listings as I was there at that time & added the maps to the Cemeteries. I found the cemetery at Peach Creek over grown and impossible to get into (high weeds. I was afraid to go in there as it was very hot and Dad told me about the snakes (copper heads and rattlers. There may be another one on up the mountain. Dad and I drove up the Mtn and turned around at a gas well. Someone said they talked to someone and they took them up the Mtn to the old Coal Tipple. I have looked at the Google map & can’t see anything of a cemetery. Could be in the woods as the old people died & the young moved away in the great migration and no family around to take care of them. I have seen many in that shape. Happy belated Valentines Day to you! Glad to help and glad you found me! I am subscribed to New Comments. Take care.

          childers.diana@rocketmail.com

  166. Mary (Joyce) Repinski

Thank you for this forum to connect to our heritage. My father was born in Stirrat, WV. His name was Dana McCormick. Born in 1934 to Andrew (Ed) and Elizabeth (Ethel) McCormick. He worked in the coal mines there. He was killed by a drunk driver while on duty as night watchman. He was hit on November 13th 1942 and died the 16th. The local newspaper had an article in the paper at that time about his death. I have tried for years to find that article. I actually drove to Logan in 2014 to search for it to be informed they no longer had them at the office and needed to look at the college library. I went to search there and alas, closed on Friday. I was heartbroken to not find it. I have written emails to the college library to request the article but received no response at all. I live in northern WI and it is difficult to get that way. Many of our family members lived in that area. As a child, we drove to Logan many time to find my grandfathers grave. Dad only could find it a few times as it was abandoned. That is sad to me. A cousin of ours said he had the newspaper article and would share it with us but he did not. That was ten years ago.
If anyone can get copies if the article I would so appreciate it. My dad was only 8 years old when his father died. His life was hard after his passing as was his mother’s. He worked hard and moved around a lot. We settled in Wisconsin and he passed away in 2011. Please email me and I will pay for the copy. Joyce Repinski of Tomahawk, WI. mjmr54@charter.net us my email.
    Thank you for reading this.

    1. I should have been clear that my grandfather Ed was the man who died in 1942. Not my father. Sorry that I wrote it to be a bit confusing.

  169. I’m looking for info about my father Timothy Pauley, son of Elijah Pauley and Lena Vannatter Pauley. Lena’s father was George Summer Vannatter and the family lived around Harts Creek, WV. Elijah and Lena ran a boarding house in Ethel, WV for a while before moving to Big Ugly, WV but I think the right name is Leet, WV. Elijah worked for the coal mines and farmed and was an unpaid preacher in churches sometimes. Tim Pauley worked at grocery store in Logan, the A&P. Tim graduated in 1951 or 52 from Logan High School and went into the Navy. Tim was one of 11 children. Also any info you have on Evelyn Pauley would be useful. She married an Elmer Lee “Buster” Kazee and lived in Stollings, WV for many, many years. Buster worked for police as radio dispatch and had lost part of one leg in WW2 in Holland to a German tank. 173. Anita Barker Sorensen

I’ve obtained copies of a number of newspaper articles from all across the U.S. about the murder of my great aunt, Rosa B. White, daughter of Henry Scott White. His youngest daughter, Nina Mearl White Heugel was my maternal grandmother. What I’m not able to find is where I can possibly obtain a copy of her death certificate, autopsy report, in what Funeral Home her funeral was held, and where she may have been buried. Records shows she was married to Lewis Ellis at a very young age, but find nothing about a divorce.
Anyone have any further information? Thank you!

    1. Anita, what year did Rosa die?
      FamilySearch.org shows her marriage
      in 1895 to Lewis Ellis.

death record if you can’t find it

Did Rosa die as a White or Ellis
or was she married to someone
      else?

  174. Christopher R. Brewer

I am looking for information on the Brewer line, and more specifically, Edward Brewer, who is listed as Woodard Brewer in the 1860 census. He was married to Isabella F. Brewer, and was, according to the 1860 census, born in Logan Co., but at the time of the census the family was living in Boone County. We also learn that he was a farmer, and that the value of his personal estate was 40 (I assume that’s $40). The census lists three children, the first being my great-great-grandfather, Charles Brewer (age 6). The other two were Sylvester M. (age 4) and Michael A. (age 1).

Edward is not listed in the 1850 Boone Co. census, which makes sense as he would have been 16 or so at the time, and so probably still living with his parents (in Logan Co.?). He is, however, listed (age 47) in the 1880 census together with Chas. W. (age 25), Mont (age 23), Nancy (age 14), James (age 10), Farlina (age 7), Edward (age 6). Having been born around 1834, that age would be correct for Edward, and also for Chas. W. (i.e., Charles W.), Nancy and Farlina (Lena?). But where is Isabella? Dead? She’s not listed in any of the cemeteries here (nor is Edward, or any other Brewer for that matter). No Brewers are listed in the 1870 Lincoln Co. census.

As previously noted, I know that his name was Edward, and not Woodard, based upon three sources:

The Boone County Register of Births – Nancy Brewer (b. August 12, 1865) is there listed as the daughter of Edward and Isabella F. Brewer. Edward is there, once again, listed as a farmer, and the register says that Nancy was born at Little Coal.

Charles William Brewer’s Obituary & Nancy Cambell’s COD – Nancy is listed in Charles’ obituary as a surviving sibling, and her COD lists Edward as her father.

So, we know that his name was Edward, that he was married to Isabella F., that he was born in Logan Co. but lived in Boone Co. (likely Little Coal River), that he was a poor farmer, and that he likely had six or so children (Charles, Sylvester, Michael, Edward, Nancy and Lena).

  186. April Cline-Jones

In search of a William Louis Campbell, father of John Campbell. John refused to speak of his family but John’s WWI Draft card says he was born in and his dad lived in Logan County in 1918. I have found no census records of him there that I can link to John. John’s mother was Martha May but one of the few things John ever mentioned about his family is that he had an unkind step-mother, so Martha may not be the name of William in all records. I have LOTS of records of John. But I don’t have any records of him actually living with or linked to his parents or his birth in Logan county. I plan to take a trip to Logan county this fall but I would love to have some additional evidence that he did, in fact, live there in Logan county.

    1. April, familysearch.org shows a John B. Campbell,
parents William & Martha living in Greenbrier,WV.
      in the 1920 & 1930 Census.

It was Harrel Clay, on 28 Jan 1946 at the Beer Gaidor (can’t read that word very well on the death cert). He was a war vet, only 23 at the time of death. Family stories are that it was over him being mixed up in the Hatfield/McCoy mess. Have tried to find a newpaper article online but have had no luck. Any info would be wonderful. My husband was born less than a month later & he was given Harrel’s name, but the family was so torn up about the death that they couldn’t say the name, so my husband became “Buddy”. Thank you!

I can be reached at Jenniferliers@yahoo.com

The man was Louie Papardopaulous who
changed his name to Louie Pauley. You can
      find him at familysearch.org.

      1. Bob,
Thank you so much! That matches exactly with my Grandmother’s memory that he mentioned changing his name. My question is, how do I find is info on Familysearch.org. I see that name, but nothing that truly confirms it is the same person. And I can’t find anything under the older name. Am I searching incorrectly? Thanks for your help.

          1. Thanks so much Tony. I am new at this, so excuse the questions and this may not be the place to post them, but here are my concerns:

My grandmother remembers him being around 26 in 1956, so that entry seems just a bit too old in age. The other issue is he was supposed Greek and changed his name from Papadapaulos. I don’t think his parents ever changed their names.

We are hoping to make a trip up there this fall. Perhaps via the courthouse or newspaper archives we can narrow some of this stuff down.

            Thanks!

  213. I am trying to search for the name of a family who owned a restaurant in downtown Logan in the mid to late 1950’s. Looking for info on Clara Christian, Crawley Creek, W.Va. May have been born in Clear Fork Area, McDowell County. Mother of Troy around 1905 was Troy’s birth.

      1. Yes, I found the family on 1910 Census. But have not been able to find more info on Clara Christian – birth, death or marriage certificates. My grandfather was born out of wedlock and apparently was born Christian, but his father was Christopher Columbus Belcher. Troy later went by Belcher. Any more suggestions on ancestry links?

  221. I am looking for my Grandfathers Father. Reverend Henry John Simpkins Jr. was Born on 14 March 1885 In Mingo, WV. I do know that he lived in Horsepin Hollow Logan WV. He was married on 1 Jan 1906, with a Minnie Ellis. He had listed as his father on his Marriage Certification of H. Simpkins and M. Mounts. I have found out that M. Mounts was Martha Mounts and she worked as a laundress in the area. She has Henry listed as a “Mounts” on the 1900 Census in the Mingo Stafford District. I also know that Mingo and Logan counties were together at one time then separated into separate counties later. I am told by several people that Henry John Simpkins was a Junior but I have no evidence of this.. I would love to find out if this is indeed the case. I also assume that it may be possible that Henry was conceived out of wedlock, or his father could have passed away shortly there after. I am also told that Henry had a Half-Brother named Willard H. Hatfield. I would appreciate any information that you may have to share with me. According to the 1900 Census, It is listed that the mother and father was born in WV but I am unable to obtain any records relating this. Thank you for your time!

    1. Shelby Burgess

I believe Manns Nob cemetery is located on top of Fourteen Mile Mt. Not certain of this though.
You mentioned John Wiley in your text. I worked with him at one time, in the coal mines. I remember he was a fighter for what he wanted- him and a haulage motorman got into a fight in the mine, because the motorman did not want to interrupt his haulage to get supplies for John. the fight did not last long as both men lost their lights in the fracus, and couldnt see anymore. John came out the winner though as he got the motorman to comply. As you can guess, I am very old.

  245. Hello,

My mother was Lucille Killen Deason (she was also at one time Lucille Killen Woody). My maternal parents were Julie (Carter) and William (Jack) Killen. Her siblings were Idabel, Cynthia, Jeanette, Mabel, Dorothy Jean, Curtis, Freeman and Bobby. My mom grew up in an area that is now the Chief Logan State Park and was born in 1926. Her maternal aunts were Alice, Nancy and Clary Carter. She and my father and all but one member of her immediate family are interned in Highland Memory Gardens at Pecks Mill.

My father was Robert Deason ( born Blankenship). His parents were Charles and Garnet (Gore) Blankenship. His siblings were Leonard, Goldie, Elsie, Rhoda, Aileen, Joyce, Donna Jean and Ronald. Many of them lived at Holden and Man.

I am aware that most of the siblings mentioned have passed away with the exception possibly of my Aunt Donna Jean (Blankenship) but I was wondering if there might be anyone around that possibly knew my Mom or Dad or their families?

    Kindest regards,

    Deborah

  247. Hi, and thanks for starting this message board! I’m having the best time reading the posts and picturing old places I used to visit.

My grandfather grew up on Hart’s Creek. His name is Raymond Lewis Lilly b June 10, 1907. He was married to Mantie Pauley and they had seven children ( James Raymond, Lewis Edward, Lois Jean, Ross Howard, Nora V Delores (my mom) Carol Joy, and Jesse Paul.

His siblings were; Alice (Crislip) Laurie (White) Richie, Jessie James, May, Mirt (Myrtle), Frank, Eddie (Edward) and Nina. I seriously doubt any are still alive today.

I am just getting started on learning more about this side of our family. I remember driving back up to the old home-place several times when I was spending my summers with my grandparents as a child. At that point Richie still lived in the old house.

I’m told that his parents were buried next to their home in a family cemetery, I imagine there are other Lilly’s there too.
His parents names were John Ed Lilly and Susan Butcher.
His great grandparents were John Heanin Lilly who was married to America Jane Stevens.

I’d love to talk to anyone interested. Lol, I think I’m related to most of the people on this board! The overwhelming majority of y’alls names are so familiar to me. I can be reached at jenfordham2000@yahoo.com My name is Jennifer (Lilly) Fordham

      Olivia,
I don’t know if this is your family, but I found a marriage on the WV Archives & History website. This was all I could find. Hope it helps:

Roy Coles was born Kanawha County. At age 24, he married Ernestine Eanes age 19. She was born Logan County. They were married in Kanawha County, August 4, 1946 by Bishop R.L. Jennings. Looks like he lived in Charleston and she lived in Chesapeake. You might want to check the Kanawha County and Logan County 1940 census to try and find parents names and the siblings.

I think their granddaughter Alma has an site on line. I will contact her and direct her to this page.

      1. Hi Barb
I have since connected with Alma and she has given me alot of information about the family. my father in-law doesnmt get on the family subject much so its hard to ask him anything. but thanks for the info!

        1. Barb Tomblin Randolph

Sarah, I am very happy that Alma has been helpful to you.. Like your father-in-law, some family members are just not interested in genealogy whatsoever and they make it known that they are not going to talk much about it and that’s sad.

          1. yah i think he just doesnt like to talk about it because it is a rough subject for him. he lived a rough life with his parents and it brings up things that are hard for him to deal with his parents both dies before he was 20 so he didnt really understand them i guess every once and awhile he will talk about it… but he has to be in that kind of mood i guess. im glad that she could help me too!

My uncle is Charles Herman Isaacs and my other aunt is named Beverly Ann. My grandparents have passed away and my mother moved to Scottsdale, Az from what I know. I haven’t seen her since I left Logan as a five-year old in 1972? My Uncle Charles lives in Morehead, Ky. I last saw him in 2006. I don’t know what became of my Aunt Beverly. At any rate, if anybody is related and still living in the area, it would be nice to know. I am considering a job in WV and it would be nice to get to know my mother’s side of the family.

I did a lookup in the Butcher cemetery on Crawley Creek Rd. No names you mentioned were listed. There may be other cemeterys on Crawley I am unaware of, but this came from the Logan County Book of Cemeterys, volume 3

        1. Thank you Shelby for searching that..I have no idea where they are buried..It just said Workman’s Fork in WV on the Social Security Index

          1. Krystal ;
There is a Workman Fork on Harts Creek,WV. T he older names ( Smokehouse, White Oak Fks) has been changed to Workman Fork according to my Google search of Harts, WV.

          2. Thank you again Shelby..At least now,I can research deeper and hopefully find what I’m looking for..Once again, thank you for all your help.

    1. Dodie (Smith) Browning

Ktystal, Please email me directly at dbrowning47@hotmail.com. I have some information for you, including the phone number of a wonderful lady who grew up at Workman Fork. Her dad still lives there and he is ninety years old and knew everybody that ever lived there. It is on the Lincoln /Logan County Line, but technically in Logan County, but not near Smokehouse or White Oak.

    2. Joey Arlen Workman

Not sure if this helps but, at the junction of county highway 3/07 and 3/04 at the Logan County and Lincoln County line just west of route 10 is Workman’s Fork Church and two creeks meet across the road I think that may be it.?. I’m not positive but may be it. Hope this helps, Good luck finding it Google Earth may help.

      1. Sorry to be late,Joey, but my thanks for locating Workman Fork of Harts Creek,WV. So, the fork is down near its junction with the Guyandotte river, just off St R t. 10. I understand the headwaters of Workman Fk. are in Lincoln County WV. but it flows into parts of Logan County WV.
The Google search & maps I have do not show any of the creeks I am familiar with ; Smokehouse,White Oak, only Workman Fk is shown down near the mouth of Big Harts cr.

    3. It is a branch off the East Fork ( For some reason locals call it West Fork) of Big Harts Creek. It is in Logan County. The creek empties into East Fork which eventually empties into the Guyandotte River at Harts. It can also be reached by going up Crawley Creek, turning onto Striker Fork, then onto Saunders Fork and crossing the mountain (This is dirt road that is narrow and sometimes in bad shape.) to the head of Workman Fork.

      1. The locals are correct; the east Fork of Workman Branch butts up against Crawley Creek. The West Fork extends into Lincoln County WV. My Joephus Workman ancestors are buried on the West Fork, as they are listed in the census records of Lincoln County. (Thanks to Dodie S. Browning)

  264. Hello,

I am trying to find information about Thomas Arthur Kinney, born around 1932 in Logan. I have been told that he was the son of Otis (1903-1989) and Gladys Kinney (1909-1992). I found a listing in the 1940 census for a Tommy, age 7, but can find no other information.

Otis was the brother of my maternal Grandfather Albert Kinney (1900-1949), son of Leonard and Evaline.

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Anna Chambers Moore

    1. Hello Anna,

I’m the Son of Thomas Arthur Kinney, but did not know until June of 1967 when I entered the U.S. Army. My Mother (June Marie Henslee) was married to him for a very short while, and divorced him prior to my birth in 1949.

I too, am seeking any and all info / data concerning him. All I know is that he was born 18 April 1931 (Maybe 32) in Logan County West Virginia and was employed there as a Saw Manufacturer?, working for Ohlen Bishop!

There are other folks helping me with this search and have verified through a myriad of documents that Otis & Gladys were indeed his parents. Hi older Brother Otis Jr passed away in 2010 and was living and Buried in Columbus Ohio.

    2. Hello Anne,

  267. Sue DeJournett

    Hi!
I am the wife of Ned Russell DeJournett who grew up in Logan County, born and raised in Stollings. Some of his family names are McCormick, DeJournett, Stollings, Avis, and related families. Any old friends or relatives reading this post?

    1. Shelby Burgess

      Hello;
I remember Stollings DeJournett. He was principal at CHS back in the 1940s.
His hobby was collecting Indian artifacts. He had several arrowheads, stone tools, that he showed to the students. Was he related to you?

    2. My mother’s maternal grandmother was Chloe Ann Ellis (nee DeJournett) (1881-1926), who was married to James Ezekial Ellis. They lived in the Stollings/McConnell area. Her father was John Scott DeJournett (or DeJournette) (1856-1890) He had 8 children; sons John Hamilton (1877-1944), Willaim Harvey (1879-1953), Russell Yowell (1883-1965), and Joseph P. (1886-1888). (various spellings: DeJournett, DeJarnette, DeJarnett) Russell had 2 children: Stollings Thurman De Journett (1907-1975) and Homer Vivian DeJournett (1907-2001) (records retrieved from familysearch.org) I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me.

      1. Thanks, Dennis;
Stollngs handed me my CHS diploma back in the 1940s. He always appeared thin & sickly to me. Mr. Dejournett hosted a farewell party to we grads at the old Pioneer Hotel dining room. This was exciting to most of us; as we never had any experiences with formal dining; “eat at home types, grin.”

    3. Lowell Herbert Dawson

Sue, I remember both you and Ned as music majors at Marshall University. I graduated as a music major in 1961. I know you were probably two years ahead of me. I am Lowell Herbert Dawson, and I have done some research on the DeJournett family. I am not a relative. Can you believe that we have been graduated over 60 years? Later

      1. Lowell, hopefully Sue still views this site
as it was eight years ago when she posted
        her comment.

        Anywho.com shows a Sue age 83 living
in Macon GA. with a street address.
Maybe you can write her a letter.

    1. Hello, my grandmother 94 yrs was related to William Dingess. I know her mother was Mary Essa Ferrell. Do you know of the Ferrells who lived in Logan and then Chapmanville. God Bless you , and Take good care.

      1. Charlotte Herald Mills

As well as I can remember Ruby Ferrell was a school principal at McConnell elementary school. She lived right next to the road (with a fenced in yard) in Stollings. My cousin Lucille Layne (dcsd.) was a good friend and I got to visit Ruby some in her home. Lucille was a school librarian at Logan East Junior high. Mrs. Ferrell may be a relative of yours. I was born and raised in Logan and live in SC now. I just saw this website and found it interesting.

        1. Dodie (Smith) Browning

          Hi Charlotte,
I am so happy to see someone mention Ruby Ferrell. Her mother, Ida McCoy was one of my mother’s dearest friends. Ruby and her husband Ward Ferrell had no children, so they had no descendants. She was the only child of Ida and Tom McCoy. Ruby was so good to her mother. They were as close as a mother and daughter could be. I never knew of them having relatives in Logan County. If memory serves, Ruby’s parents were originally from Ky. It is quite possible that Ward hard relatives, but I barely knew him. Mrs McCoy (we weren’t allowed to call older people by their first names) lived next door to Ruby and her husband at Stollings in a house that was almost identical, with a fence separating the tiny front yards from the road. Both houses were always immaculate. Mrs. McCoy always insisted on having Mother and me at her house for both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner after my sisters were married. Mrs McCoy was one of the best cooks on the planet! Ruby looked a lot like her mother, but I never knew her dad. He was deceased when I first met Mrs. McCoy (about 1943). If I’m not mistaken, Ruby’s dad built both of the houses where they lived until they died as far as I know. I don’t have any pictures of their houses, but I have a picture of Ida McCoy that I took in front of our house at City View, when she was visiting us in 1940s. I will dig it out and have Frank post it. These wonderful folks should be remembered. Thank you for mentioning Ruby (McCoy) Ferrell.

      2. Hello, my grandmother’s father’s mother was Sarah Dingess, daughter of William Dingess. My grandmother Mary Catherine Ferrell is going to be 96 in May, and she is very sharp, with wonderful stories about her family growing up in Chapmanville. Google search Life in the Hollar by Mary Catherine Rathbun and you can see her stories published on a blog. If you wish to speak further with her, my email is reneeshumay@gmail.com Thank you!

    3. Hello Velva,
I’m not sure if I can help you find memories of your relatives but, I do have some information on the Dingess’. My mother-in-laws name is Bonnie Darleen (Brumfield) Lucas. Her parents were Lace & Nora (Gartin) Brumfield. Her grandparents were Charley & Caroline (Dingess) Brumfield. I have researched much of this, with the help of Bonnie & my mothers genecological program. Bonnie (bless her heart) is approaching her 85th Birhtday but, she still remembers alot of stories when she was growing up in Logan, WV. I have much more information regarding Bonnies’ decendants. I hope this response to your quest finds you well 🙂 Hope to hear from you soon. Take Care Velva. Sincerely, Vicki

      1. Please email me at brankirk@yahoo.com! I am writing a book that involves the old Brumfields. I am very familiar with Lace’s family. Of his kids, I knew Herbie best. I live in Harts, near all of the old Brumfield sites. I have pictures of Charley and Caroline Brumfield, and their parents. Lots of news clippings, pictures, etc. I have spent the past twenty years talking to all of the old Brumfields: Corbett Brumfield, Ida Taylor, Mae Brumfield, Earl Brumfield, Dave Brumfield — and anyone related to them. I have many questions! Thanks.

    4. Billie Jo (Dingess) Simmons

      Hello!
My dad was Allen Dingess, son of Cora Lee and Ray Dingess. You are my Great-Aunt Velva from Arizona… Is that correct?

    5. Hi, Velva. Your grandmother Lydia Eveline (Adkins) Dingess was a sister to my ancestor, Charles Adkins (1850-1919), father to Reb Adkins and Maw Tiny Brumfield. Charles was a JP on Harts Creek for many years. I’d love to talk with you. Am I correct in my notes that Lydia Eveline had a daughter named Francis by a Butcher before she married Calvary Dingess? Francis married preacher Charley Curry. What do you know about these people? Calvary Dingess was the son of “Coffee Pete” Dingess. Do you know why they called him that? Was George Adkins married more than once? If so, can you help me sort out his children? I used to visit your cousin, Risby Brumfield.

    6. Are you related to Mary/ Maud Adkins I believe married to Hiram Boothe, Mother to Ida Boothe who was wife to My relative Wes Sylvester McChristian, Mother and father to my great great grandfather John McChristian? All from logan, Lincoln and stirrat WV.

  272. Nancy Bartoe Staley

Trying to find some of my relatives in the Logan area. My Grandfather was John Franklin Bartoe, my Father was his youngest son Luther Clarence Bartoe. I know there are probably a lot of my cousins still living in the area. His brothers were, Odell, & John that lived in the area. Odell was known as Wink and raised his family in Lenore. Hoping I hear from someone there!
    Thanks
    Nancy

    1. I believe my ex father in law, John Bartoe might have had a brother named Luther. He was married to Edith Simpson. They had six children, of whom, to my knowledge the only one left may be Terry Bartoe. Deceased children of John and Edith were Willis, Phyllis, Mona, Marvin, and Homer. As far as I know Terry is living but I have no idea where.
I know of no children from Willis, Phyliss had a son, Rodney who lived in the Bridgeton, N.J area. Mona had two children, Edith”Edie” McCabe and a son Tommy who was killed in a hunting accident by his uncle Terry. Marvin lived in the Cora area of Logan, WV. He had two sons in NJ, I can’t remember their names and several children by Brenda Gibson of Cora. He died a couple of years ago of lung disease, and never married any of the mothers of his children. Homer died by suicide, he was my ex- husband. He had a previous wife to me, last name Butcher who died in a fire. They had no children. Homer and I had one son. John and Edith lived at the 20 Whitman area. He was a miner. I hope this helps. I do caution you that in this particular branch was a strong history of alcoholism. I tell you this for medical history. Best wishes.

      1. Nancy Bartoe Staley

Twins run heavily in the Mahone, Mahorn familys of Logan c. WV. I knew some of the Mahones who lived on Dingess Run.
I dont know how accurate the story was back then, but it was said the Mahone males had problems finding mates to marry because of the twin incidents.

I had a cousin , Harold Mahone that lived in Lancaster, Ohio that had twin girls. Probably from the same family because he was born in Logan WV.
