    1. We heard stories about Vanovers many times. Everybody knew everybody else. A couple generations grew up together.

  1. My grandfather was Roy Lee Gayhart (pictured in the photo of miners on a new coal car). My name is Roy Lee Gayhart II

      1. Quite a bit. My uncle, Tom Gayhart had a website about Sharples years ago. It has photos and stories. I see a few of the photos here. I have fond memories visiting Sharples as a kid. Heard many stories about the Burgesses, the Lanes, the Tottens, and many more. My dad, grandfather and grandmother are buried near Madison. Lots of stories about Boone County Coal, and Ethyl where my dad (Paul) and uncle were born.

        1. Roy, your family history goes way back to the 1800s and maybe further. Your name is German, means strong and brave.

          1. My sister traced the Gayhart-May family roots back to Germany. They originally settled in Argilite KY. My gg-grandfather was conscripted by the Kentucky Confederate Army and died a POW in Indianapolis. It was around that time that the name changed from Gearhardt to Gayhart

  2. Kimberly A Tackett

Thanks for the history. Now Ronnie’s grandchildren can have a visual to go with the stories he and Rex would tell me.

  3. William Sandford Browning was my Great Grandfather, I never met him and my Grandfather Chris/Doc passed away in 1959 when I was a baby. Thank you I enjoyed seeing that picture of my Great Grandfather. I can see my father Carson Browning in his face. My name is John/Jack Browning

  4. Very interesting. Did not remember a Sharples HS even existed(sorry). Wasn’t the Boy Scout Camp right up a hollow from Sharples?!?
