Bob,
Chauncey post office opened in 1913. I believe the railroad was extended up from Monaville about a year or so earlier. There was a “Litz-Smith Island Creek Coal Company” mine at Chauncey. However, there was not a mine or company by that name listed in the 1915 WV Geological Survey for Logan County.
There was a Shamrock Coal Company mine at Cora called the “Litz Mine”. Cora post office opened in 1907. Presumably, that mine began about that time which would have been several years before the “Litz-Smith Island Creek Coal Company” at Chauncey began operation.
I believe that at one time there was a “Litz” mine in the vicinity of Accoville.
Also, there is a community on Mud Fork known as “Litz Addition”.
For Douglas Dempsey, do you have any info about this Coal Mine, when it opened and closed and how many people worked there?

Douglas, I thank you for your comments.
WVU Library states it has 5 pay slips for Henry Ellis who worked at the mine from 1915 to 1916.
The Litz-Smith Coal Company opened up a mine in the area. Then a Post Office was built.
Chauncey was named for Chauncey Browning, 1903 to 1970, a member of WV. Supreme Court of Appeals. His family owned much of the land in the area.
James Jeffers, what is your family Bio and connection to Chauncey?
