  1. The following info was found online. The Golden Gloves, Amateur boxing competition was initiated by Arch Ward ( 1896- 1955 ) in 1926. He was a Sports Editor with the Chicago Tribune for 25 years. The tournaments name stems from the small gold charm in the shape of a boxing glove that is awarded to the winner. The New York tournament was started by Paul Gallico ( 1897- 1976 ) in 1927, a writer with the New York Daily News. He was also a well known American Author. According to Sportcasting.com,the fastest boxing technical knockout was on November 4, 1948 in a Golden Gloves tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota when Mike Collins hit Pat Brownson on the first punch in four seconds and he went down, there was no ten count, the referee called Pat out.

  2. Robert, Wonderful story about Ronald. In 1948, what was the name of the boxer that Ronald knocked out and do you have any photos of him and where did he live? Where was the event held in WV? What was Ronald’s boxing record.

    1. Robert McCormack

Wish I knew all of that. I no longer have the original newspaper article, only the picture from the Logan Banner

      1. Robert, your brother Ronald boxed at the Logan Armory located across the street from the Bus Station in 1948. This was a WV. Tournament, lots of boxers from Logan County there. Sam Tiller ( 1935 – 2020 ) from Cherry Tree was a boxer. There was a Harts Creek team there. At this time its unknown where the winners went on to box.
