Cherry Tree Map/Residents

Cherry Tree Map 1940s and 50sResidents of Cherry Tree, Whites Addition and Fisher Bottom as remembered by Bruce Davidson. This list was abstracted and edited by Robert McCormack.  Editing was based on notes from Helen (Tarkany) Piros and from his own memories.  As a child I heard many times that at one time there were two very large cherry trees in the upper end of Cherry Tree about where Steve Tarkany’s “Handy Andy Grocery” later stood.

Additions and corrections are welcome. It is not possible to indicate what period of time any family lived in these homes. In some instances, only one or two members are known. In many instances the names of the parents are not known. You can check census records or tax records to further pinpoint when a family resided in Cherry Tree. Much of the community has disappeared due to the economy, floods, etc.

1940 Census of Monitor & Cherry Tree, Logan County, West Virginia Taken April 6 – 18 by Ruby Mae Walsh

In attempting to transcribe this census from microfilm there are undoubtedly errors.  In some cases I made a guess as to the spelling of a name.  My purpose is to try to sort out in a logical order who were neighbors.  Did Ruby Mae Walsh go up one side of the community and down the other, criss cross through the community, do a lot of back tracking?  Any insight as to putting neighbors in order would be appreciated.

    1. Hey Benny, thought I would write and ask if you had any old photos or memories about the Walsh family they lived in the house #97 I am a grandaughter of Ben and Dora Walsh. I have wrote two others and I won’t repeat myself. After reading this if you remember any of them or the Sheppard Family they were a large family. There was Fred, Wayne, Tommy, John L., Harrison, and Frank and one daughter my aunt Martha who was a fun loving beautiful person. All of my uncles and my aunt Martha has passed away. If you would have anything to share I would appreciate the help. I was young girl when we lived in Cherry Tree but I have fond memories of my childhood. Thanks Jeanette

  3. Frances Keener Spagnola

My family has deep roots in Cherry Tree. I am related to the Edmondson, Cornwell, Gore and Bryant families. My Grandfather was John Taylor Walsh and his wife was Zetta Gore Walsh. Mrs. Edmondson was his aunt. The Walsh family was from Fisher Bottom (Flora Belle, Tennis, James (Bub), Chester, Rowena, Juanita, Anna, Nina, Audrey June, John and Sue). My Grandfather built a house on what was know as the slate dump, I beleive not far from the swinging bridge. I lived in that house for a short time. I remember well the day Jerry Johnson fell from a vine. I visted Aunt Mary Cornwell and my Greatgrandmother Nana Belle Walsh weekly. Nana Belle’s house has behind the Edmondson’s. It was a small house and she would not allow children in her parlor and she was very outspoken if you were to venture near that room. Greta Bryant married James (Bub) Walsh. Dana and his siblings were my Mother’s, Flora Belle Walsh Keener, cousins. I do not have many memories of Cherry Tree but I do remember Glen Paul getting in to trouble for tossing my little red rocker over the creek bank just to see how far he could throw it. I have really enjoyed reading this site and look forward to any new postings.

    1. I hope all is well with everyone im just starting to look up daddys side of the family was wondering if you could help.

      sincerly

    2. Just to say thanks Frances for your great entry I enjoyed reading about my grandparents relatives, I am unsure of how they all connect. I have been working on my family tree and its a real mess in some areas ha ha. I really enjoy this site and I too appreciate all his hard work to make it a great place to find lost friends and family. I have great loving members growing up in Cherry Tree we lived in several different houses in the bottom. I am the grandaughter of Ben and Dora Walsh. Their children were Helen who is my mother. Anna Marie(Patty)is my aunt she has passed in 2008. Bobby, Billy also have passed. I have one uncle SD Walsh still living and my aunt Maudie who lives with my mom now. They call themselves the “Reciepe Sisters” for fun. I would love to find old photos of them or the house they lived in. The house you talked about it may be the one my grandpaw Ben build. I don’t know. Mom has a hard time with her memory so as time passes on so much gets lost. I want to collect all I can to pass on to my grown children and my grandchildren. I have three grown children and 6 grandchildren. I hope to connect with ya. Will go before I write a book. Anyone else out there with photos or stories about the Walsh or Sheppard families in the Cherry Tree area I am all ears. Please email me and tell me what you know to help me. I deeply appreciate anything. Thanks Jeanette

  4. Jeanette (Sheppard) Adkins

I was looking for any information or pictures about the Sheppard family that lived near the Dyer, Sharon, Elsie, Mae. Was they kind to the Sheppard family. I thought they may have been. I am also looking for anything related to the history of this family and other connections to different families in the area for my grandchildren family tree and history. Thanks Jeanette

    1. Phyllis Dyer Richardson

My mother was Mae, and my dad Jr. Dyer. Yes we lived close to the Sheppard family but were not really close to them. My aunt Florence was married to my uncle Earnest. Florence was Bessie Sheppards daughter I believe. She had a brother Frank, Wayne, and a half brother Ernest. a sister whose name escapes me right now. But I remember a Jeannette but cant connect the name right now. My mom and dad and my brother and my baby sister, Sharon are all gone. My sister Elsie lives in Longview, Texas. I would love to hear from you again.

    2. Phyllis Dyer Richardson

I remember that my aunt Florence was actually a Pack. She had a brother named Earnest Pack and Earnest and his wife had a son, Donald. Another Sheppard was their half sister, Martha. And then there was HarrrisonSheppard. Are you Helens daughter? It seems that I remember her little girls name was Jeannette. By the way I live in San Angelo, Texas, my brother Bud(Paul) lives in Henderson, Ky, my brother David lives in Ohio, my brother Roger lives in Abilene Tex., and our baby brother Eddie lives in Longview, Texas where Elsie lives. Hope to hear from you

      1. Hey Phyllis How are you? I have a rough time back here in these hills. I am trying to work on that family tree and I can’t seem to find anything on the Walsh’s or the Sheppard’s I know they were there. I am proof. LOL. Hope this finds you ok. I have been taking mom back and forth to the doctor too. I can’t believe this site. It’s the greatest. I love it so much! I am afraid I will write to much. I will email ya soon. Tell Elsie Howdy from Me. Love you girls, keep us in your prayers.
        Jeanette

        1. Jackie Edmondson Donahue

My great grandparents last name was Walsh. My grandmother was Maud Edmondson married to Frank Edmondson. They had 12 kids. Homer, jack, Pete, Russell, clete, Frankie, glen, ken, Dana, Janice and Charlei. I may have forgot a name or two. Anyway, I remember my dad talking about the Walshes. I think they were granny’s parents.

          1. Mrs. Edmonson was my Sunday School teacher. We missed her when the family moved to Ohio. My older brother, Ronald, was a good friend of Pete.
