Logan County was formed in 1824 from sections of Cabell, Giles, Kanawha and Tazewell counties. Logan County and Logan city is named for the famous Indian chief of the Mingo tribe, Chief Logan.
The city of Logan is the county seat. Logan was first established as Lawnsville in 1827. The town was first incorporated in 1852 as Aracoma. Its first mayor was Thomas Dunn English who wrote “Ben Bolt”. The name was changed to Logan in 1907.

[1] Fisher Bottom was a little community located on Island Creek adjacent to Cherry Tree. It was demolished around 1956 to build the Logan Blvd.
[2] City View is also called City View Addition.
[3] There is also a Baisden in Mingo County.
[4] Clothier is located partly in Logan and Boone County.
[5] There is also a Davis in Tucker County.
[6] Gay is an early name for Mount Gay. A 1916 ad by the Gay Coal & Coke Company gave an address of Gay, W.Va. The name may have been changed because there is a Gay, WV in Jackson County.
[7] Greenville was changed to Hunt.
[8] Monaville was formerly known as Vanceville.

I grew up in a little community called Wilbur, it was between Earling and Lyburn on Route 10. It sat right where Walker Machinery is now. The turn off for the community was in the same spot were you turn off to go to Walker’s. There was a post office that sat in the same curve, it was Rita Post Office, Rita is across the river from Walkers. We all had to move when Waller Machinery bought the land that the community sit on, probably around the mid 70s. It was a great place to grow up, everyone watched out for each other. The community never shows up on any maps since Walker bought it and destroyed the community. There was a big Rail Road sign that said Wilbur, the tracks when right along the edge of the community. All the kids had to walk to the school bus stop that was beside the highway because the bus didn’t come over into the community. That you, JClintB@frontier.com
Only one slight mistake on Logan Towns & Communities. Baisden is in Mingo Co. WV. It is the Post office for the Browning Fork of Gilbert Creek. But thats ok; providing the Mingo County folks do not object!
Yes, you are right Shelby. There is a Basiden in Mingo County but to make things confusing, there is one in Logan County too.
I have many pictures of Becco, WV from the early 1920s including several from a September 1924 flood there (think I also have the Logan Banner articles about the flood) – would you be interested in them? I can send digital copies if you like. My father was born there in 1924 and, being a twin, created a ‘stir’ – so much so that 10 years ago in Hollywood, CA I met two sisters from Lorado and during our conversation I mentioned that he was a twin and one sister disappeared, only to return with a snapshot of my Dad and his twin sister at 3 months old!!!
